What’s more, Jakarta’s most polluted day in 2020 had PM2.5 levels seven times higher than the WHO safe limit.

In August 2023, Jakarta earned the title of being named the most polluted city in the world,. On the worst days, the concentration of PM2.5 in Jakarta’s air exceeded the WHO’s recommended healthy limit by more than 5 times, measuring at 80 micrograms. To combat this severe pollution, half of the city’s civil servants are working from home, aiming to cut vehicle emissions and improve the overall air quality for its residents.

Jakarta and Indonesia has its worst air pollution and smog during dry season (April to October) compared to the monsoon season (November to March). Dry season AQI (Air Quality Index) levels in Jakarta can often reach over 150, or a ‘unhealthy’ level.

In 2020, the Jakarta’s best month for air pollution was October. PM2.5 pollution concentrations averaged 23 micrograms during October (AQI 73). Even though it was the best month for air pollution in Jakarta, average levels were still above the WHO recommended limit. Jakarta’s worst 2020 air pollution month was June, with average pollution levels of 136 AQI (50 micrograms). June pollution averages in Jakarta were 5 times the WHO recommended limit.
