They have been found to result in fewer viral infections among healthcare workers compared to surgical masks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">N95 Mask Material<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>N95 masks made from synthetic\u00a0plastic fibers are the most common. Companies use these fibers to make clothes like quick-dry shirts, rain jackets, yoga pants, or any stretchy fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.fs.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-1d94a5dcf8936eaa79ef9b9f6ce5789e\" alt=\"Synthetic Fibers\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Mask makers often give the polypropylene material an electrostatic charge. For example, the 3M 9502 (that Smart Air tested for <a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/microwaving-masks-disinfect-covid-virus\/\">decontamination in the microwave<\/a>) contains several metal parts. The mask uses steel for the staples (which secure the straps to the mask) and aluminum for the bendable nose clip.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.fs.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-198aae0279e364ec14fd88711a4bf08b\" alt=\"N95 Mask Materials\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>To make the straps of the 9332 mask, 3M uses polyisoprene. Polyisoprene <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/polyisoprene\">is in natural rubber<\/a> and also synthetic rubber. The N95 rating requires masks to capture 95% of particles. Thus, theoretically, N95 masks could be made out of any sort of material as long as they meet these requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This chart explains exactly what\u2019s required of masks to be certified as N95 in the US versus similar ratings in the EU, China, Australia,\u00a0Korea, and Japan.
