N95 respirators are an important part of healthcare personal protective equipment (PPE), filtering out over 95% of particles as small as 0.3 microns when properly fitted to the user’s face. They have been found to result in fewer viral infections among healthcare workers compared to surgical masks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

N95 masks made from synthetic\u00a0plastic fibers are the most common. These plastic fibers are similar to the fibers in synthetic and polyester shirts many people wear.<\/p>\n\n\n

Polypropylene in the filter medium is a plastic. Manufacturers make this plastic out of fossil fuels<\/a> like oil.<\/p>\n\n\n

That means the fibers in these masks are similar to the fibers in our clothes. Companies use these fibers to make clothes like quick-dry shirts, rain jackets, yoga pants, or any stretchy fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n

N95 Masks Also Contain These Materials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Besides the filter material, N95 masks can also include other materials, such as metal. For example, the 3M 9502 (that Smart Air tested for decontamination in the microwave<\/a>) contains several metal parts. The mask uses steel for the staples (which secure the straps to the mask) and aluminum for the bendable nose clip.<\/p>\n\n\n

To make the straps of the 9332 mask, 3M uses polyisoprene. Polyisoprene is in natural rubber<\/a> and also synthetic rubber. Other masks have elastic fabric straps<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n
