But as we previously discussed, <a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/?p=15616\">volcanos emit a variety of pollutants<\/a> in the air and these pollutants can <a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/?p=15646\">travel for thousands of miles<\/a>! One of the major health dangers of volcanic eruptions and the emitted pollutants are respiratory diseases. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fine Particulates Are Primary Cause of Volcanic Health Effects<\/h2>\n<p>Volcanic ash emitted by volcanos contains small particulates of rock, minerals, and glass that are so small they can enter your bloodstream and organs. The <a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/pm10-pm2-5-difference-particle-air-pollution\/\">health effects of small PM2.5 and PM10<\/a> particulates emitted by volcanos are well documented. <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1029\/2020GH000256\">Studies<\/a> on volcanic eruptions point to PM2.5 and PM10 sized particulates as the primary reason for the negative health effects seen in nearby communities.<\/p>\n<p>As seen below, the smaller the particulate entering the body, the greater the danger. Ash particulates smaller than 4 micrometers can lead to chronic respiratory diseases.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/lung.jpeg\" alt=\"Small particulates in volcanic ash can be a great danger to human health.\" class=\"wp-image-15864\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/lung.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/lung-300x250.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Health Dangers of Volcanic Gases<\/h2>\n<p>Gases released by volcanos can also be a danger to humans. The two primary volcanic gases that can be dangerous to humans at high concentrations are SO<sub>2<\/sub> and CO<sub>2<\/sub>. <\/p>\n<p>Exposure to high levels of SO<sub>2<\/sub> (&gt;1,310 \u03bcg\/m<sup>3<\/sup>)&nbsp;for 3 minutes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/feart.2020.00036\/full\">can induce respiratory attacks<\/a> in asthmatic individuals. CO<sub>2<\/sub> can be dangerous in low elevations close to the eruption. Small pockets with high concentrations of CO2 can form. When concentrations reach over 15%, CO<sub>2<\/sub> can even be deadly.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/chart.jpeg\" alt=\"SO2 released by volcanos can be a danger to human health.\" class=\"wp-image-15923\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/chart.jpeg 720w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/chart-600x317.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/chart-300x158.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption>Large amount of SO<sub>2<\/sub> commonly emitted by volcanos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Volcanic Ash Exposure Increases Risk of Respiratory Problems<\/h2>\n<p>Studies that examined the health effects of volcanic eruptions on nearby communities found an increased prevalence of a variety of respiratory issues. <\/p>\n<p>After the Soufri\u00e8re Hills volcano in the West Indies had been erupting intermittently for over 2 years, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/10889136_Volcanic_ash_and_respiratory_symptoms_in_children_on_the_island_of_Montserrat_British_West_Indies\">study<\/a> examined the effects of volcanic ash on the 440 schoolchildren (aged 12 years and under). Symptoms include chest discomfort, throat and nasal irritation, and uncomfortable breathing. (<a href=\"https:\/\/panoramichealth.com\/klonopin-online-in-usa-a-chill-pill-phenomenon\/\">Klonopin<\/a>)  Although these symptoms may be short-lived, there remains a risk of long-term respiratory effects. <\/p>\n<p>Chronic respiratory diseases such as silicosis and asthma can be activated by small PM2.5 ash particulates. Below is a picture of silicosis, which can develop after breathing in super small crystalline <a href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/volcanic_ash\/respiratory_effects.html\">silica particles emitted by a volcano<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/silicosis.jpeg\" alt=\"Silicosis lung disease from volcanic eruption\" class=\"wp-image-15925\" width=\"450\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/silicosis.jpeg 450w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/silicosis-300x251.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Volcanic Eruptions Worsen Symptoms of Respiratory Diseases<\/h2>\n<p>Volcanic eruptions can also exacerbate those already dealing with respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis. In fact, studies show that pre-existing respiratory diseases are an important risk factor in having adverse affects from a volcanic eruption. <\/p>\n<p>There are many examples of those dealing with respiratory conditions having worsening conditions after a volcanic eruption. After the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paho.org\/disasters\/index.php?option=com_docman&amp;view=download&amp;category_slug=article-1236&amp;alias=2575-the-respiratory-health-hazards-volcanic-ash-a-review-for-volcanic-risk-mitigation-575&amp;Itemid=1179&amp;lang=en\">Mt. St. Helens eruption <\/a>in Washington, 1\/3 of those with respiratory diseases experienced worsened conditions.
