The city aims to tackle this crisis by installing a smog tower. Yet, an important question remains: Can Delhi&#8217;s air purifier tower effectively combat outdoor air pollution?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">How the Delhi Smog Tower Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s Delhi\u2019s smog tower.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/smog-tower-model.jpeg\" alt=\"Does the Delhi smog tower work?\" class=\"wp-image-18875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/smog-tower-model.jpeg 685w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/smog-tower-model-600x420.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/smog-tower-model-300x210.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s 24 meters tall and has 40 large fans. It sucks air in from the top and pushes filtered air out from the bottom of the tower. Inside, the tower has 10,000 filters to capture particle sizes up to 0.3 microns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Delhi government claims that this smog tower can deliver clean air up to one thousand cubic meters per second. It also uses 8 sensors to measure the air quality before and after filtration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">How Effective is the Delhi Smog Tower in Reducing Air Pollution?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To see how effective the Delhi smog air purifier is, the Smart Air India team went to the tower with a laser particle counter (the Kaiterra Laser Egg). Fifty percent is better than zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem is that even this giant tower cleans just a tiny bit of air compared to all the polluted air in Delhi. That cleaner air is just a drop in the bucket. Maybe it&#8217;s cleaning the air in the neighborhood, so even the air at the inlet is cleaner than the rest of Delhi. We tested that by comparing the air here to the average on that day in Delhi according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/in.usembassy.gov\/embassy-consulates\/new-delhi\/air-quality-data\/\">US Embassy pollution data<\/a>. On that day, Delhi averaged 120 micrograms of PM2.5 (per meter cubed, download the data <a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Delhi-PM2.5-Pollution-December-8-2021.xlsx\">here<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, air elsewhere in Delhi was just as polluted as the air at the tower inlet. That suggests the tower was not making the neighborhood air significantly cleaner than the rest of Delhi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Not the First Ineffective Smog Tower<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first outdoor air purification project. Similar smog towers were installed in Connaught Place, Delhi, and <a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/xian-unveils-smog-fighting-tower-work\/\">Xian<\/a>, China. Data on the effectiveness of these &#8220;smog towers&#8221; was also not promising.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/ytyZNq0YeegZs-2xp7jJIqcx3SiFnE0lG3lOcphcD--5noj5vroRNkXhQ3Q2qcjAnHkN84FwE3cMQJSoVDVN5ouN0sHbwp4moXykwd_cYlgX_SH0JAihRWENGhBCBcbS-BvxMto=s0\" alt=\"How Delhi's smog tower works\" style=\"width:850px;height:614px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde built an ionizing tower in Beijing and Tianjin, claiming it would clean the outdoor air. Independent tests found the air filter tower&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/846093\/chinas-giant-smog-sucking-tower-was-simply-no-match-for-its-air-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was not providing clean air<\/a>&nbsp;even within 10 meters of the tower. A careful look at the team\u2019s own modeling estimated only a 20% drop among large particles (PM10, not PM2.5), assuming zero wind, and only up to 20 meters from the tower. Thus, the tower was more art than science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">A Better Way to Reduce Smog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to reduce air pollution is to curb emissions at the source. For example, China cut pollution in Beijing by 50%.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Beijing-pm2.5-pollution-2008-2022.jpeg\" alt=\"Beijing-pm2.5-pollution-2008-2022\" class=\"wp-image-27391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Beijing-pm2.5-pollution-2008-2022.jpeg 602w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Beijing-pm2.5-pollution-2008-2022-600x415.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Beijing-pm2.5-pollution-2008-2022-300x207.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>How did China do it? They didn\u2019t plant trees. Trees have only a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/plant-trees-filter-china-air-pollution\/?utm_source=Quora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tiny effect of PM2.5 air pollution<\/a>. And why would they? Trees didn\u2019t evolve to suck up particles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, China restricted emissions in several&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.cn\/zwgk\/2013-09\/12\/content_2486773.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national plans<\/a>. It made&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/Why-doesnt-China-better-refine-its-petrol-phase-out-diesel-and-have-higher-standards-for-motors-catalytic-converters-if-they%E2%80%99re-serious-about-reducing-air-pollution\/answer\/Thomas-Talhelm\">gasoline cleaner<\/a>. It&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/china\/2013-05\/27\/content_16533835.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">phased out coal heating<\/a>&nbsp;in cities. Beijing even banned&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/nov\/27\/china-barbecues-air-pollution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">street-side barbecue grilling<\/a>.
