I was intrigued. If we could really lower the cost of clean air, that\u2019s a win!<\/p>\n<p>But we have to be sure these cheaper machines are as effective. So I ordered the cheaper machines, tested them systematically, and <a href=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/china-english-are-all-diys-the-same-poor-results-from-%E8%BF%98%E6%88%91%E8%93%9D%E5%A4%A9\/\">found they performed much worse<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/particlecounting.tumblr.com\/post\/109805327191\/is-a-30-rmb-hepa-possible\">2<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>A New Way to Lower the Cost of Clean Air<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean there aren\u2019t ways to make HEPAs even more affordable. Recently I tested one way to do that: if we can shave 1 millimeter from the size of the HEPA, we can save 6% on the price. This new size still covers the fan opening, but does it still work as well?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Method<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To test this question, my collaborator Anna ran 10 overnight room tests with the 290cm in her Beijing apartment and compared it to <a href=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/china-english-the-really-small-stuff\/\">my earlier tests of the 30cm HEPA<\/a> in the same 15m2 room.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-231 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/06\/e.png\" alt=\"e\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Like in my earlier tests, I calculated effectiveness as the percent reduction in particulate from the start of the test to the average of the last four hours. Here\u2019s what one of those tests looks like with the reduction calculation laid out. The blue line is indoor 0.5 micron particles; the red line is outdoor PM2.5<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-229 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/06\/q.png\" alt=\"q\" width=\"412\" height=\"368\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On average, the new 29cm HEPA reduced 0.5 micron particle levels in the room by 86% and 2.5 micron levels by 91%. These results were almost identical to my prior results with the 30mm HEPA.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-230 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/06\/w.png\" alt=\"w\" width=\"364\" height=\"362\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This new HEPA lets us lower the cost of clean air without sacrificing any effectiveness. Win!\u00a0We just lowered the price of <a href=\"https:\/\/item.taobao.com\/item.htm?spm=a1z10.1-c.w4004-7525708604.3.SkLYIe&amp;id=35110622876\">Smart Air HEPAs<\/a> from 80 RMB to 75 RMB.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HEPA Cost Comparison<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next I took that price and compared it to the two biggest brands out there, Blue Air and IQ Air. (Also check out <a href=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/diy%E9%95%BF%E6%9C%9F%E6%88%90%E6%9C%AC%E5%A4%A9%EF%BC%9F%E5%B0%91%E4%BA%8E%E4%B8%80%E7%93%B6%E7%9F%BF%E6%B3%89%E6%B0%B4\/\">the long-run cost comparison<\/a> .)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nerd Note on Replication<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a side note, this test is now the third series of room tests I\u2019ve published with the Original DIY (<a href=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/china-english-the-really-small-stuff\/\">early tests<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/hepa%E5%AF%BF%E5%91%BD%E6%B5%8B%E8%AF%95%EF%BC%9A%E7%AC%AC200%E5%A4%A9\/\">200-day longevity test<\/a>). Add that to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myhealthbeijing.com\/pollution\/a-200-rmb-diy-air-purifier\/\">Dr. Saint Cyr\u2019s tests<\/a>, and I\u2019d say that\u2019s a satisfying amount of Fluctuations<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I like these long tests more than the common 20-minute tests (such as CADR tests) because this mimics how most people use purifiers. However, one drawback of these long tests is that outdoor PM2.5 levels sometimes change over the course of 8 hours. If outdoor PM2.5 drops, that can artificially inflate effectiveness. If outdoor PM2.5 rises, that can artificially decrease effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>These changes should cancel out over 10 tests, but it\u2019s worthwhile to re-run the analysis while excluding days with large outdoor changes. Among these 10 tests, two days (9\/25 and 11\/10) had large outdoor PM2.5 changes. Without those two days, the averages were almost identical: 84% on 0.5 micron particles and 91% on 2.5 micron particles.<\/p>\n<p><b>Average Outdoor PM2.5 During Tests<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also worthwhile to check out bad outdoor PM2.5 was during the tests to see if these days were representative of normal Beijing air. The average outdoor PM2.5 was 116 micrograms. That\u2019s about 20 micrograms higher than Beijing\u2019s average PM2.5 over the last five years (according to my analysis of the US Embassy\u2019s PM2.5 data). Thus, if anything, these tests are tougher than the Beijing average.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-224 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/06\/5.png\" alt=\"5\" width=\"391\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few months after I published my DIY tests, there were already Taobao stores up and running, selling DIYs even cheaper than my 200 RMB.
