However, this is not the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a great source of data to help answer this question: the US Embassy. The US Embassy (and its consulates in four cities around China) publish hourly PM2.5 readings. They also make all of their historical data freely available.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"356\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image.jpeg\" alt=\"US Embassy hourly PM2.5 readings in China\" class=\"wp-image-27772\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image.jpeg 602w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-600x355.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-300x177.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-6c4184bb gb-headline-text\">Why is Air Pollution Worst at Night?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/pm-2-5%E4%BB%80%E4%B9%88%E6%97%B6%E5%80%99%E6%9C%80%E4%BD%8E%EF%BC%9F\/\">I\u2019ve analyzed that data<\/a> to find patterns in pollution, such as the finding that PM2.5 in Beijing tends to spike at night:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"468\" height=\"323\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-2.jpeg\" alt=\"Beijing average hourly PM2.5\" class=\"wp-image-27773\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-2.jpeg 468w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-2-300x207.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the opposite of many people\u2019s intuition (including mine). I asked 139 people to guess when PM2.5 is the lowest on average, and the most popular answer was nighttime. I analyzed data from 2008\u20132015 for different months of the year, and here\u2019s what I found:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-1.jpeg\" alt=\"monthly average PM2.5 in Beijing\" class=\"wp-image-27774\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-1.jpeg 602w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-1-600x523.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-1-300x262.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>On average, PM2.5 is the worst in February and other winter months. The data from Chengdu shows a similar pattern:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"526\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-4.jpeg\" alt=\"Chengdu monthly average PM2.5\" class=\"wp-image-27776\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-4.jpeg 602w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-4-600x524.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-4-300x262.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-aed03659 gb-headline-text\">Why is Winter Air Pollution Worse?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I said this data could give us a clue as to why winter air is worse. But isn\u2019t it just showing that winter air is worse? Here\u2019s the key:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"308\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-3.jpeg\" alt=\"Harmonic mixing heights \" class=\"wp-image-27777\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-3.jpeg 602w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-3-600x307.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-3-300x153.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This is the mixing height of air in the day time (black) and night time (gray) throughout the year. This data is for Delhi, but it should be roughly similar in most other places in the northern hemisphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When air mixes over a larger area, those pollutants get dispersed. But when air is stuck close to the ground, those pollutants are thicker. That low mixing height can be particularly obvious in extreme cases of \u201cinversions,\u201d where cold, heavy air sits on top of warmer air near the surface:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-4.png\" alt=\"mixing height affects PM2.5 level\" class=\"wp-image-27779\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-4.png 600w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-4-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Mixing height is lower in the winter and at night, when air is cooler and winds are calmer on average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course mixing height is only one factor. In the winter, people burn fuels to stay warm. I\u2019ve talked to construction workers next to my apartment in Beijing who told me they had to make a lot of noise after midnight because that\u2019s when they could get their big trucks past the police, who aren\u2019t supposed to let unpermitted heavy trucks into the city.
