But adding that carbon layer raises a question: adding carbon means the fan has to power through yet another layer of resistance. Does that make purifier less effective at removing particulates?<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Test Method<\/h3>\n<p>To test this question, I ran 10 room tests with <a href=\"https:\/\/item.taobao.com\/item.htm?spm=a1z10.1.w4004-7525708604.1.wIxSnY&amp;id=36350325474\">the Cannon<\/a>\u00a0and 10 tests with the <a href=\"https:\/\/item.taobao.com\/item.htm?spm=a1z10.1.w4004-7525708604.3.wIxSnY&amp;id=35171288192\">Original DIY<\/a> in the same 15m2 Beijing apartment as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/china-english-harder-better-faster-stronger-diy\/\">my earlier tests without a carbon layer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Dylos-Particle-Counter.jpg\" alt=\"Dylos particle counter pollution test\" width=\"362\" height=\"416\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Dylos-Particle-Counter.jpg 500w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Dylos-Particle-Counter-261x300.jpg 261w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I measured how much particulate it removed with a <a href=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/dylos-dc1100-pro-air-quality-monitor-particle-counter\/\">Dylos particle counter<\/a> and compared the particle counts (1) before I turned on the purifier at night and (2) the average of the last four hours before I woke up in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Anna-Test-Setup-NEW-1.png\" alt=\"Air purifier test laser particle counter\" width=\"601\" height=\"335\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4994\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Anna-Test-Setup-NEW-1.png 2623w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Anna-Test-Setup-NEW-1-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Anna-Test-Setup-NEW-1-768x428.png 768w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Anna-Test-Setup-NEW-1-1024x571.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Carbon vs. HEPA Results<\/h3>\n<p>With the additional charcoal layer, <a href=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/cn\/en\/#compare\">the Cannon<\/a> particulate effectiveness dropped 1-2%. Its 0.5 micron effectiveness dropped 19%, and 2.5 micron effectiveness dropped 15%.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4395\" src=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Original-Does-adding-carbon-reduce-effectiveness-EN-271x300.png\" alt=\"DIY purifier activated carbon test\" width=\"355\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Original-Does-adding-carbon-reduce-effectiveness-EN-271x300.png 271w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Original-Does-adding-carbon-reduce-effectiveness-EN-768x852.png 768w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Original-Does-adding-carbon-reduce-effectiveness-EN-923x1024.png 923w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Original-Does-adding-carbon-reduce-effectiveness-EN.png 1505w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Conclusion: Carbon Tips<\/h3>\n<p>For people who need carbon (<a href=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/does-carbon-really-work\/\">and that may\u00a0not be everyone<\/a>), I would recommend adding the <a href=\"https:\/\/item.taobao.com\/item.htm?spm=a1z10.1.w4004-7528923369.1.yLT3Pq&amp;id=42959087014\">carbon<\/a> to the Cannon, but I would think twice about adding carbon to the Original. To test whether that affected the overall estimate, I isolated the three testing days with changes in outdoor PM2.5 concentration of less than 10 micrograms.<\/p>\n<p>For those three days, the 0.5 micron results were still 95%. The 2.5 micron results were 93%, which is 2% lower than in the overall tests. Thus, I calculated the average with and without that outlier removed.
