Most of us are now breathing cleaner air at home, but what about when we are in public spaces? What\u2019s the air like in that gym we go to, or in our favorite restaurant?<\/p>\n<p>Smart Air\u2019s on a mission to find out, and this winter we&#8217;re starting with gyms. Who&#8217;d would want to wear a mask while working out?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/0-running-with-mask-beijing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"571\" height=\"330\" class=\"wp-image-5261 aligncenter\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Gym Test<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>To get to the bottom of this, we asked 5 friends to take a particle counter into their Beijing gyms to test the air both inside the gym and just outside the gym. That percentage is almost identical to <a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/safe-indoor-air\/\">Smart Air\u2019s tests of apartments, offices, and restaurants in Beijing<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/is-indoor-air-better-than-outdoor-air\/\">Shanghai<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/nepis.epa.gov\/Exe\/ZyNET.exe\/9100CCPM.TXT?Back=ZyActionS&amp;BackDesc=Results+page&amp;Client=EPA&amp;DefSeekPage=x&amp;Display=p%7Cf&amp;Docs=&amp;EndTime=&amp;ExtQFieldOp=0&amp;File=D%3A%5Czyfiles%5CIndex+Data%5C06thru10%5CTxt%5C00000017%5C9100CCPM.txt&amp;FuzzyDegree=0&amp;ImageQuality=r75g8%2Fr75g8%2Fx150y150g16%2Fi425&amp;Index=2006+Thru+2010&amp;IntQFieldOp=0&amp;MaximumDocuments=1&amp;MaximumPages=1&amp;Password=anonymous&amp;QField=&amp;QFieldDay=&amp;QFieldMonth=&amp;QFieldYear=&amp;Query=&amp;SearchBack=ZyActionL&amp;SearchMethod=1&amp;SeekPage=x&amp;SortMethod=h%7C-&amp;Time=&amp;Toc=&amp;TocEntry=&amp;TocRestrict=n&amp;User=ANONYMOUS&amp;XmlQuery=&amp;ZyActionD=ZyDocument&amp;ZyEntry=1&amp;ZyPURL\">the US Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s home tests<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even in places with no purifiers, indoor air tends to have less PM2.5 than outdoor air.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Indoor-vs-Outdoor-PM25-EN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"509\" height=\"471\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5347 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Indoor-vs-Outdoor-PM25-EN.jpg 509w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Indoor-vs-Outdoor-PM25-EN-300x278.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 509px) 100vw, 509px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Bad News:<\/strong> Unfortunately, &#8220;better than outdoors&#8221; does not mean &#8220;safe.&#8221; Here&#8217;s how those PM2.5 levels compare to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/fs313\/en\/\">the World Health Organization\u2019s annual limit of 10 micrograms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Slide6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"389\" class=\"wp-image-5342 aligncenter\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Even in the gym with the best indoor air that day (Gym D), PM2.5 was still more than 8 times above the WHO limit!<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">What Gym-Goers Should Know<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On average, gyms have lower PM2.5 than outdoor air, but gym air is often still far over the safe limit.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Calling All Gym-Goers:\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">The Smart Air \u201cBlue Zone\u201d project<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/5-\u84dd\u8272\u533a\u57df.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"202\" class=\"wp-image-5270 size-full aligncenter\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/5-\u84dd\u8272\u533a\u57df.jpg 800w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/5-\u84dd\u8272\u533a\u57df-300x76.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/5-\u84dd\u8272\u533a\u57df-768x194.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>Across the globe, there are small communities where people live longer and healthier lives: Blue Zones. We want to find and create our own Blue Zones where people can breathe clean air.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In our first series of tests we couldn&#8217;t find a gym with PM2.5 levels within the WHO limit. Finding a gym with clean air to work out in doesn&#8217;t seem easy! We want to test more gyms and create a public ranking of gyms to help you breathe safe when working out. If gyms have lots of new equipment or use chemical cleaners, they will have higher rates of <a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/can-activated-carbon-remove-formaldehyde-vocs\/\">chemical gases like formaldehyde<\/a> and benzene (also known as &#8220;VOCs&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even though PM2.5 levels are falling, years of bad air pollution across China has led to many people installing air purifiers in their homes.
