On the days when they ate broccoli, the smokers had significantly lower levels inflammation markers in their blood. Beforehand, researchers randomly assigned some participants to eat broccoli sprout extract equivalent to about 150 grams of broccoli. I\u2019ve written about<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/Does-the-Airy-plant-pot-really-help-plants-purify-the-air-more-effectively\">people who make incredible claims about plants cleaning indoor air<\/a>. In this domain, claims are large, and evidence is sparse.<\/p>\n<p>For some, the motivation may be the general belief in natural cures. That&#8217;s the case with this<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/kamal_meattle_on_how_to_grow_your_own_fresh_air\/transcript#t-150038\">popular TED talk<\/a>, which claims that a few potted plants can produce spectacular reductions in lung symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/5-TED-Talk-Plants-EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"662\" height=\"297\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5651 \" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/5-TED-Talk-Plants-EN.png 874w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/5-TED-Talk-Plants-EN-300x135.png 300w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/5-TED-Talk-Plants-EN-768x344.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For others, the allure may be money. That seems to be the case with the people behind<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/airy\/airy-bio-active-air-filtering\/description\">this plant pot<\/a>, which the makers<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/airy\/airy-bio-active-air-filtering\/description\">claim reduces pollutants by 75%<\/a>. The makers\u2019 Kickstarter campaigned netted 106,000 Euros. Surprisingly, formaldehyde levels went <strong>up<\/strong> during their test.<\/p>\n<p>There are studies that find benefits of plants. Yet most of these studies took place in small sealed containers surrounded by growing lights.<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ntrs.nasa.gov\/archive\/nasa\/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov\/19930073077.pdf\">The famous NASA study<\/a><span>\u00a0tested plants in small plexiglass boxes\u00a0<\/span>(although there are<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/15287394.2012.721169?src=recsys\">exceptions<\/a>). Those conditions are nothing like normal people\u2019s homes.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Evidence for Plants vs. Broccoli<\/h3>\n<p>A look at the data on natural solutions for pollution is weak. The researchers of the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4125483\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>in China\u00a0pointed out that broccoli sprouts offer \u201ca frugal means\u201d to reduce the health effects of air pollution. That&#8217;s critical at a time when companies are hawking<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/detail.tmall.com\/item.htm?spm=a312a.7700824.w4011-16533498246.51.60666c38pT0vZl&amp;id=550555337975&amp;rn=46252d4e264fcbe9da0fe3be4f666a77&amp;abbucket=3\">$2,000 imported air purifiers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Five Foods That Help Your Body Fight Air Pollution<\/h3>\n<p>So, how can we add sulforaphane to our diet?
