For example, many articles trumpet how great plants are as purifiers<\/a>. Plants do work in sealed test containers surrounded by grow lights<\/a>, but real-world tests show that plants have no detectable effect on particulate pollution\u00a0(1<\/a>) indoors (including tests I did in Beijing<\/a>). So it’s important to have real-world data.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Real-Home Formaldehyde Off-Gassing Tests<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, scientists in Hong Kong did real-world tests<\/a>. They tested for formaldehyde and other VOCs in homes and then compared new\/remodeled homes with older apartments. The data showed f<\/span>ormaldehyde fell 48% one year after remodeling.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

After two years, formaldehyde dropped to the same levels as in older homes. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Off-Gassing Formaldehyde From Homes – Caveats<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But it\u2019s worth noting that these are home in Hong Kong. Why\u2019s that important? Because temperature and humidity make formaldehyde off-gas faster<\/a>. In cooler, drier places like Beijing or New York, this off-gassing will probably take longer.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
