Every year, as winter blankets India, over a billion people find themselves navigating through streets filled with toxic, polluted air. Whether in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad, the question on everyone’s mind becomes: Do face masks and air pollution masks truly offer protection?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout India, I’ve encountered intelligent, skeptical individuals expressing their doubts on this matter. There’s a scarcity of concrete data demonstrating the effectiveness of pollution masks, and even less information is available on the most prevalent brands in the Indian market. With the assistance of Dhariyash, a dedicated member of the Smart Air team, who journeyed to an air pollution mask lab in Mumbai, we aim to dispel these doubts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. \u201cThere\u2019s no way for pollution masks to capture the tiny particles.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The skeptic case: <\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The most dangerous particles are the smallest particles, and levels of these are dangerously high across India<\/a>. But masks are so thin! How could they possibly get those smallest particles?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scientific pollution mask test:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh tested common masks<\/a> by running a diesel generator (to mimic car exhaust) and piping the exhaust through different masks. They used a particle counter to see how many particles made it through the mask. This is a great benchmark for pollution in India, data shows that one of the main sources of air pollution is diesel generators (check out this report on Bangalore’s air pollution<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s my super scientific rendering of the setup:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

One important detail: <\/span>the particle counter they used<\/a> <\/span>measures down to .007 microns. We\u2019re talking about truly tiny particles here!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, they tried a simple cotton scarf. Sometimes I see bikers in India wearing these.<\/p>\n\n\n

Not great, 28% of particles blocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, they tried a cheap surgical mask like the ones used in most of India’s hospitals:<\/p>\n\n\n

Surprisingly good! (Fit tests generally show lower results–see below–but still a lot higher than most people’s intuition.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, they tried several bike masks.<\/p>\n\n\n

Most were around 80%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then they tried several cheap 3M masks.<\/p>\n\n\n

They all scored over 95%. Pretty good!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion:<\/strong> <\/span>Masks capture even very small particles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. \u201cOK, they capture the small particles, but when you wear them, all the smoke just leaks in the side.\u201d <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The skeptic case: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In theory, masks can catch the really small particles, but those tests aren\u2019t on real faces! When you actually wear them, you can\u2019t get a good enough fit, so they\u2019re basically useless. What’s more, they’ve probably been made to fit foreign, not Indian faces!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scientific test:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This question is tougher to answer because you have to measure the mask while you’re actually wearing it. For that, you need a US$10,000 <\/span>fit-test machine<\/a>. Fortunately, I begged and begged a mask company in Mumbai until they let me use their lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We tested a whole range of common masks you can pick up in India – including some of the most expensive, the cheapest as well as the most common. They ranged from cotton surgical masks to N90 (equivalent FFP1), to N95 (equivalent FFP2) to N99 (equivalent FFP3). We covered brands including 3M masks, Vogmask, Honeywell, and Venus. Here’s the setup and the masks we tested:<\/p>\n\n\n

The blue tube is sampling air outside the mask, while the white tube is sampling air from inside the mask (more details on the methods <\/span><\/a>here<\/a>). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are the results.<\/p>\n\n\n

The 3M and Venus masks performed best. The cotton mask and surgical masks performed worst. Surprisingly, some of the big-name brands were some of the worst – the Honeywell FF2100 and Vogmask N99CV both captured less than 90% of pollutants,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Well Do Air Pollution Masks Work for the Broader Population?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s important to make clear: masks that fit well on Dhariyash’s face might not fit other people’s faces well. However, there is evidence from a broader population that masks fit most people well. A scientific study of 3M masks on 22 Chinese people found a median fit score of 99.5%<\/a>–essentially the same as the top results from Dhariyash. Results were also nearly identical in our earlier mask tests in Beijing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best Face Mask For The Price in India<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Best yet, the data shows effective masks don\u2019t cost a lot of money.<\/p>\n\n\n

Surprisingly, the most expensive mask we tested \u2013 the Vogmask N99CV \u2013 was one of the worst-performing masks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exception: Gas Pollutants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Masks are great, but note that these are tests on particulate pollution (including PM2.5). Most commercially available masks don\u2019t target gas pollutants like NO2 and O3, so masks do not give 100% protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Is there a documented health benefit of wearing a mask?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is probably the hardest question to answer. However, two solid studies have randomly assigned people in Beijing to wear masks or not and measured their heart rate and blood pressure (1<\/a>,\u00a02<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n

While wearing masks, people had lower blood pressure and better regulated heart rates.<\/p>\n\n\n

We’re yet to see any tests like this done in Delhi or other cities in India, but we’re pretty certain the results would be the same.<\/p>\n\n\n

Masks capture even the smallest particles\u2014even while people are wearing them (on faces in India too!) \u2014 and they have documented health benefits. That should be enough to satisfy even the skeptics! <\/div>
