Improvement Came Mostly from Winter Enforcement<\/h3>\n

By breaking down the data month by month, analysis shows that Beijing’s air quality improvement came mostly during the winter period. The rest of the months saw relatively similar levels to 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n

Much of this improvement is likely due to <\/span>the switch from coal heating to natural gas<\/span><\/a>. Following the switch in late 2017, winter air quality improved noticeably.<\/span><\/p>\n

This progress in air quality comes on top of progress the year before. Year 2017 <\/span>was already Beijing\u2019s cleanest on record<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite Progress, Beijing Still Among China\u2019s Dirtiest Cities<\/h3>\n

Although its air quality has improved, Beijing is not one of China\u2019s cities with the cleanest air. Among 15 of China\u2019s largest cities, Beijing is in fourth place as of 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

More Air Quality Data Becomes Available<\/h3>\n

Chinese cities now have more PM2.5 data than ever before. Before the US Embassy <\/span>started publishing PM2.5 data in 2008<\/span><\/a>, public data was unavailable.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, new data has limits. For example, journalists uncovered <\/span>officials spraying water near a sensor<\/span><\/a> in an attempt to lower the numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n

This data covers <\/span>PM2.5 pollution<\/span><\/a>, particles smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter that can penetrate deep into the lungs. Particles this small can even <\/span>enter the bloodstream<\/span><\/a>. Studies have shown that PM2.5 <\/span>raises blood pressure<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>inflammation<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>rates of heart attacks and strokes<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Studies Document Protective Effects of Purifiers, Masks<\/h3>\n

Despite the harms of PM2.5, studies have found that <\/span>wearing masks prevents harmful effects on blood pressure and heart rate variability<\/span><\/a>. Similarly, placebo-controlled studies of air purifiers have found that reducing particulate in the home <\/span>prevents harm to blood pressure<\/span><\/a>, inflammation, and immune response\u2014even among young, <\/span>healthy twenty-year-olds<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
