Following the switch in late 2017, winter air quality improved noticeably.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This progress in air quality comes on top of progress the year before. Year 2017 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/chinas-air-get-better-2017\/\"><span>was already Beijing\u2019s cleanest on record<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Despite Progress, Beijing Still Among China\u2019s Dirtiest Cities<\/h3>\n<p><span>Although its air quality has improved, Beijing is not one of China\u2019s cities with the cleanest air. Before the US Embassy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2015\/03\/opinion-us-embassy-beijing-tweeted-clear-air\/\"><span>started publishing PM2.5 data in 2008<\/span><\/a><span>, public data was unavailable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, new data has limits. For example, journalists uncovered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sixthtone.com\/news\/1001594\/officials-try-to-water-down-air-pollution%2C-freeze-building\"><span>officials spraying water near a sensor<\/span><\/a><span> in an attempt to lower the numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This data covers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/What-is-the-difference-between-PM2-5-and-PM10-with-respect-to-the-atmospheric-pollutants\/answer\/Thomas-Talhelm\"><span>PM2.5 pollution<\/span><\/a><span>, particles smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter that can penetrate deep into the lungs. Particles this small can even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pm-pollution\/particulate-matter-pm-basics\"><span>enter the bloodstream<\/span><\/a><span>.
