New analysis from Smart Air shows that China is making progress on its \u201c<\/span>war on air pollution<\/span><\/a>.\u201d PM2.5 air pollution was down in 14 out of China\u2019s 15 largest cities. Yet one region saw far more progress than the rest.<\/span><\/p>\n

South Sees Modest Air Quality Gains<\/h3>\n

In southern China, from Shanghai to Shenzhen, air quality improved modestly. Shanghai saw air quality improve 9%.<\/span><\/p>\n

This analysis uses over 21,000 daily average PM2.5 data points from official sensors around the country. These data points showed, for example, that Guangzhou\u2019s PM2.5 fell a modest 3%.<\/span><\/p>\n

Northeast Sees 2018 Air Quality Miracle<\/h3>\n

While most southern Chinese cities saw air quality improve by less than 10%, cities in China\u2019s northeast improved by much more. Shenyang\u2019s air quality improved by 19% in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Harbin saw the biggest improvement out of 15 major Chinese cities. Harbin\u2019s air quality improved by an impressive 32%. With that improvement, Harbin moves from tied with Beijing in 2017\u00a0to 20% lower than Beijing in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Air Quality Measures Benefit North More Than South<\/h3>\n

This data suggests that China\u2019s recent \u201c<\/span>war on air pollution<\/span><\/a>\u201d is having stronger effects in northern China than southern China. The switch <\/span>from coal heating to natural gas<\/span><\/a> naturally benefits the cold north more than the south. The more industrial northeast may also be benefitting more from the recent move to <\/span>take diesel vehicles off the road<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another factor is that northern China started from a worse baseline air quality. Even after the air quality progress, China\u2019s five most polluted major cities are north of the Yangtze River. Thus, progress may be easier to produce.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other northern cities saw large improvements in air quality too. Tianjin air quality\u00a0improved 19%, while Xi\u2019an improved 17%.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, progress did not reach all of northern China. Zhengzhou actually saw PM2.5 go up 7%<\/a>\u00a0\u2013the only one of these 15 cities to see air quality worsen in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite Progress, China\u2019s Air is Still Harmful<\/h3>\n

Despite the northeastern miracle, its cities\u2014and all 15major cities Smart Air analyzed\u2014are far above <\/span>the World Health Organization\u2019s annual limit<\/span><\/a>. Even China\u2019s cleanest major city, Shenzhen, averages over twice the limit.<\/span><\/p>\n

This limit matters because studies have shown that PM2.5 <\/span>raises blood pressure<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>inflammation<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>rates of heart attacks and strokes<\/span><\/a>. This is true <\/span>even at PM2.5 levels 50% below<\/span><\/a> the lowest average in China.<\/span><\/p>\n

Studies Document Protective Effects of Purifiers, Masks<\/h3>\n

Despite the harms of PM2.5, studies have found that <\/span>wearing masks prevents harmful effects on blood pressure and heart rate variability<\/span><\/a>. Similarly, placebo-controlled studies of air purifiers have found that reducing particulate in the home <\/span>prevents harm to blood pressure<\/span><\/a>, inflammation, and immune response\u2014even among young, <\/span>healthy twenty-year-olds<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
