Harbin\u2019s air quality improved by an impressive 32%. The switch <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadialogue.net\/article\/show\/single\/en\/10964-China-softens-approach-to-home-heating-switch\"><span>from coal heating to natural gas<\/span><\/a><span> naturally benefits the cold north more than the south. The more industrial northeast may also be benefitting more from the recent move to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-pollution-diesel\/china-to-crack-down-on-diesel-trucks-raise-fuel-standards-idUSKCN1OZ06H?fbclid=IwAR3GUtsqNF1Q9hCJfJxqhwjawfGsKB_8mtxLxGaduwXWOf4BJUgpLSq_qKQ\"><span>take diesel vehicles off the road<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another factor is that northern China started from a worse baseline air quality. Even after the air quality progress, China\u2019s five most polluted major cities are north of the Yangtze River. Tianjin air quality\u00a0improved 19%, while Xi\u2019an improved 17%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/\u897f\u5b89.png\" alt=\"Xi'an PM2.5 pollution 2017 vs. 2018\" width=\"599\" height=\"395\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/\u897f\u5b89.png 974w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/\u897f\u5b89-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/\u897f\u5b89-768x507.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>However, progress did not reach all of northern China. <a href=\"https:\/\/mp.weixin.qq.com\/s?__biz=MzA5MzQ0NDYyNA==&amp;mid=2650753857&amp;idx=1&amp;sn=a3a368ddad00a94f344c1c94ddba50ae&amp;chksm=8856243ebf21ad28acc0d40ae8f226d28b48407e3f0bd5c1bce7dcf4c03c7f76d68f1c0edbad&amp;token=1698322896&amp;lang=zh_CN&amp;scene=21#wechat_redirect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zhengzhou actually saw PM2.5 go up 7%<\/a>\u00a0\u2013the only one of these 15 cities to see air quality worsen in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Despite Progress, China\u2019s Air is Still Harmful<\/h3>\n<p><span>Despite the northeastern miracle, its cities\u2014and all 15major cities Smart Air analyzed\u2014are far above <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/fs313\/en\/\"><span>the World Health Organization\u2019s annual limit<\/span><\/a><span>.
