A survey found dust mites in <span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacionline.org\/article\/S0091-6749(02)91278-9\/fulltext\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external_link\">84% of US beds<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16950288\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external_link\">68% of European beds<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\">Yet it\u2019s hard to know for sure whether they\u2019re in our homes or not because they\u2019re mostly <span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/dust-mites\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20352173\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external_link\">too small to see<\/a><\/span> with our eyes. The more I write, the more OCD I\u2019m becoming.&nbsp; Can a purifier for dust mites come to our rescue?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"ui_qtext_image_outer\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"landscape ui_qtext_image zoomable_in zoomable_in_feed aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.fs.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-53e3591c453f87c2f1c19ce16d31699b\"><\/figure><div class=\"ui_qtext_image_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\"><b>Will &nbsp;Air Purifiers Kill Dust Mites?<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\">I should say I\u2019m NOT an expert in air pollution. I\u2019m just a dedicated data nerd who was doing psychology research in Beijing and then got (kind of) forced into <span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/how-to-make-diy-air-purifier\/?utm_source=Quora\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external_link\">building DIY air purifiers<\/a><\/span> to fight the crippling air pollution I was breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"ui_qtext_image_outer\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"landscape ui_qtext_image zoomable_in zoomable_in_feed aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.fs.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-916afd1ffc20690a927a34d4f917f29e\"><\/figure><div class=\"ui_qtext_image_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\">During that process, I started <span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/do-air-purifiers-remove-pm2-5\/?utm_source=Quora\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external_link\">testing air purifiers with HEPA filters<\/a><\/span>\u2014these guys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"ui_qtext_image_outer\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"landscape ui_qtext_image zoomable_in zoomable_in_feed aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.fs.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-2eb45b93da06c87aaed9f1ef4e7aad8a\"><\/figure><div class=\"ui_qtext_image_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\">Most air purifiers use HEPA filters, so let\u2019s start there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\">These fiber filters capture over 99% of particles 0.3 microns and above. That\u2019s good news for my probably-dust-mite-infested home because <span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070516093842\/http:\/\/www.microbiologybytes.com\/video\/mite.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external_link\">dust mites are 200 to 300 microns long<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"ui_qtext_image_outer\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"portrait ui_qtext_image zoomable_in zoomable_in_feed aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.fs.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-bd4a05b942be0f5c25bd8d31fe832fc2\"><\/figure><div class=\"ui_qtext_image_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\">That\u2019s easily in the range that HEPAs capture. Now, I\u2019m not sure if getting stuck in a filter would <b>kill <\/b>a dust mite. They <span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5156485\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external_link\">die in environments with low humidity<\/a><\/span>, and getting constantly blown by air <b>might<\/b> do the job, but that\u2019s speculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\"><b>Bottom line: <\/b>Most air purifiers will capture dust mites, but may not kill them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\"><b>Wait, Dust Mites Need to Be in The Air<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\">Hang on, dust mites need to be in the air for an air purifier to capture them. The problem is they don&#8217;t fly and live in <span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_dust_mite#Dust_mite_control_techniques\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external_link\">carpet, bedding, and upholstered furniture<\/a><\/span>, so they\u2019re not usually floating in the air.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\">It turns out dust mites <b>do<\/b> get thrown into the air. When we walk on carpeting, sweep the floor, dust our homes, and change our bed sheets, dust mites get thrown into the air. And because they\u2019re so small, they <span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_dust_mite#Dust_mite_control_techniques\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external_link\">stay suspended in the air for 20 minutes to 2 hours<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"ui_qtext_image_outer\">\n<figure><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/dust-floasting-air-600x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" class=\"wp-image-35245 size-medium aligncenter\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/dust-floasting-air-600x600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/dust-floasting-air-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/dust-floasting-air-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/dust-floasting-air-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/dust-floasting-air-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/dust-floasting-air-120x120.jpg 120w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/dust-floasting-air.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"ui_qtext_image_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\">That means purifiers can capture dust mites if you have the purifier on while dusting, changing sheets, or even walking around. If you\u2019re trying to target dust mites, you might want to scuff your feet along the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"ui_qtext_gif_noclick_wrapper\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.fs.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-04b5ed25dda3fe288270a5e117ea6438\" class=\"ui_qtext_image aligncenter\"><\/figure><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"gif_embed_noclick\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\"><b>Dust Mites Create Even Smaller Allergens<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\">But the picture gets more complicated for people with allergies. Dust mites create allergens by ejecting poop particles and \u201c<span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_dust_mite#cite_note-3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external_link\">partially digested enzyme-covered dust particles<\/a><\/span>.\u201d In other words, their waste is smaller than their bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"ui_qtext_image_outer\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"landscape ui_qtext_image zoomable_in zoomable_in_feed aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.fs.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-6d6e38c371e5aba834402e54130ec1be\"><\/figure><div class=\"ui_qtext_image_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\">These particles are as small as <span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10678722\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external_link\">1 micron<\/a><\/span> or <span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Particulates\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external_link\">even 0.1 microns<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"ui_qtext_image_outer\">\n<div><\/div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"portrait ui_qtext_image zoomable_in_feed aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.fs.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-7f5f3fdd00de5f38c567e18f660b0c39\"><\/figure><div class=\"ui_qtext_image_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\">We\u2019re in trouble now, because HEPA filters capture particles 0.3 and <b>above<\/b> (according to <span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.explainthatstuff.com\/hepafilters.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external_link\">websites like this one<\/a><\/span>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"ui_qtext_image_outer\">\n<div><\/div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"landscape ui_qtext_image zoomable_in zoomable_in_feed aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.fs.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-2a209dcaa7366bf20aae41363e5a24ca\"><\/figure><div class=\"ui_qtext_image_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ui_qtext_para u-ltr u-text-align--start\">Fortunately for us air-breathers, this is <span class=\"qlink_container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/Why-do-some-people-say-HEPA-filters-can-only-filter-from-0-3-microns-up-when-their-efficiency-actually-increases-below-this-point\/answer\/Thomas-Talhelm\">a common misconception<\/a><\/span>.
