It&#8217;s easy to fall into the trap of thinking the higher the grade the better. Lots of &#8220;experts&#8221; argue that the real key to identifying a good purifier is to look for a high-grade HEPA or a &#8220;true&#8221; HEPA.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"865\" height=\"362\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2-2.png\" alt=\"\u201c\u4e13\u5bb6\u201d\u8ba4\u4e3a\u597d\u7684\u51c0\u5316\u5668\u9700\u8981\u771f\u6b63\u7684\u6ee4\u7f51\" class=\"wp-image-8771\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2-2.png 865w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2-2-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2-2-768x321.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 865px) 100vw, 865px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Reality is far more interesting than this simple idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Myth: The higher grade the filter, the better the purifier.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if weak furnace filters can capture nano particles (<a href=\"https:\/\/search.proquest.com\/openview\/fd37ab9100e191cd0f265582abeee8ea\/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&amp;cbl=1456352\">they really can<\/a>), it&#8217;s still better to use a higher-grade filter, right?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"746\" height=\"313\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3-2.png\" alt=\"\u8f83\u7c97\u7684\u6696\u6c14\u7cfb\u7edf\u7528\u7684\u6ee4\u7f51\u53ef\u4ee5\u6355\u83b7\u7eb3\u7c73\u7c92\u5b50\" class=\"wp-image-8772\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3-2.png 746w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3-2-300x126.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 746px) 100vw, 746px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Why use a 99.9% filter when we could use a 99.999% filter!? (There really are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ultra-low_particulate_air\">99.999% filters<\/a>, by the way).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"865\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/4-2.png\" alt=\"99.999%\u7684\u6ee4\u7f51\" class=\"wp-image-8773\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/4-2.png 865w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/4-2-300x109.png 300w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/4-2-768x280.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 865px) 100vw, 865px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The problem with this logic is that the higher-grade filter comes at a cost. That cost is air flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Higher-grade HEPA filters will capture more particles, but they&#8217;ll let less air through. Thus, there&#8217;s probably a sweet spot in the tradeoff between air flow and particle capture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is H13 HEPA better than H12?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I started Smart Air based on the idea of using data to question received wisdom, so we set out to run real-life experiments to test this theory. We had the perfect opportunity arise when we were designing our brand-new air purifier \u2013 The Sqair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find out the answer, we fitted the same Sqair with two different grades of filters: H12 and H13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We then ran 6 effectiveness tests (<a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/cadr-airflow-difference\/\">CADR test methodology<\/a>) to see which one performed best.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/HEPA-H12-filter-600x334.png\" alt=\"H12 v H13 HEPA filter\" class=\"wp-image-26870\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/HEPA-H12-filter-600x334.png 600w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/HEPA-H12-filter-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/HEPA-H12-filter-768x427.png 768w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/HEPA-H12-filter.png 865w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The results were the opposite of intuition! How could that be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer lies in the air resistance of the H13 filter. The coarse strainer will drain the tea much quicker, but with the downside of perhaps letting a few more tea leaves through than the finer strainer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say the fine strainer takes twice as long as the coarse strainer. The weaker filter lets a little more air pollution through on the first pass, but it processes more air. Once the air passes back through the filter a second time, it\u2019ll capture another 99.5% of particles. In two passes, the H12 filter can capture 99.75% of the particles! That&#8217;s 23% higher air flow, which explains the higher overall effectiveness of the H12 filter.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class='bottom-line'><div class='bottom-line-top'>Bottom Line<\/div><div class='bottom-line-title'>Bottom Line: H12 vs. H13<\/div><div class='bottom-line-content'><\/p>\n<p>The weaker H12 filter actually provides more clean air than the stronger H13 filter. <\/div><div class='bottom-line-last'>Smart Air<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>P.S. But what about nanoparticles? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sqair HEPA captures nanoparticles too\u2014thanks to the nerd miracle that is Brownian motion. Does that mean H12 filters are cheaper too?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we were developing The Sqair, we asked exactly the same question. Turns out H12 and H13 filters use exactly the same manufacturing process. It\u2019s just a question of how tightly packed the fibers in the filter are.
