According to the World Health Organization, <span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20191211190746\/https:\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/ambient-(outdoor)-air-quality-and-health\">particulate affects more people<\/a><\/span> than any other type of pollution. So that\u2019s a good place to start.<\/p>\n<p>Can trees take particles out of the air? It&#8217;s an intuitive thought, since trees suck in carbon dioxide and put out oxygen.<\/p>\n<p>But do they suck in particles too? They probably do a bit, but trees really aren\u2019t made to take particles out of the air. If they do take in particles, they probably do so when they suck in air and water through their roots. For example, the USDA Forest Service <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrs.fs.fed.us\/units\/urban\/local-resources\/downloads\/Tree_Air_Qual.pdf\">explains<\/a><\/span>: \u201cmost particles that are intercepted are retained on the plant surface.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the crucial question if we want to use trees to solve Delhi&#8217;s pollution problem: How <em>big<\/em> is that effect? <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1352231007006140\">Researchers estimated<\/a><\/span> that all of the tree cover in London reduces larger PM10 particles by 0.7-1.4%. Other researchers estimated that more than doubling the tree cover in Glasgow\u00a0<span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0169204611002349\">would reduce PM10 by about 2%.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Particle-Sizes-Virus-Labelled.jpg\" alt=\"Size of PM2.5 and particulate pollution and can trees filter it\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9094\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Particle-Sizes-Virus-Labelled.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Particle-Sizes-Virus-Labelled-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Particle-Sizes-Virus-Labelled-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Particle-Sizes-Virus-Labelled-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yet those estimates are for larger PM10 particles. When scientists have analyzed more dangerous PM2.5 particles, the results were even more disappointing. Across 10 US cities, the\u00a0<strong>highest<\/strong>\u00a0estimate was that tree cover in Atlanta reduces\u00a0<span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0269749113001838\">smaller PM2.5 particles by 0.24%<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>At that rate, how much more tree cover would we need to reduce Delhi&#8217;s PM2.5 by 50%? Let\u2019s start with the <strong>highest<\/strong> PM2.5 effect estimate of 0.24%. At that rate, we\u2019d need to multiply tree cover by 208 times! Research has <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexfergus.com\/blog\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-air-filters-and-the-best-for-your-budget\">documented health effects<\/a><\/span> down at 5 <span>ug<\/span>\/m<sup>3<\/sup>, which is <span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20191211190746\/https:\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/ambient-(outdoor)-air-quality-and-health\">the WHO annual limit<\/a><\/span> (5 <span>ug<\/span>\/m<sup>3<\/sup>). I love trees, and I would love it if cities had more trees. And trees have <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/heat-islands\/using-trees-and-vegetation-reduce-heat-islands\">benefits other than trapping particles<\/a><\/span>. But they won\u2019t be solving our air pollution problems any time soon.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Method 3: Blocking Pollution from Sandstorms<\/h2>\n<p>Trees might serve a purpose other than sucking up particles or serving as a waste basket for particles. Some governments have planted trees simply to block masses of air pollution from blowing in. In Delhi, the main concern is smaller PM2.5 particles. What&#8217;s more, planting a tree belt would do nothing for all the pollution emanating from Delhi itself.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">More Effective Solutions to Reduce Air Pollution than Planting Trees<\/h2>\n<p>From a big-picture perspective, it makes the most sense to cut down on pollution at the source.
