A Smart Air analysis of 2019 air pollution data found that Shanghai\u2019s PM2.5 improvement has stalled out, actually increasing by 3% over 2018.<\/p>\n

A tally of “good” air dropped by 9.3% in 2019. In 2018, 32% of days in Shanghai qualified as “good”. In 2019, that dropped to 23%.\"\"<\/p>\n

The slowdown came despite Shanghai\u2019s 2018-2020 Coal Consumption Control Action Plan<\/a> and the 2019 target<\/a> of limiting coal consumption to about \u00a044 million tons. This change was larger than the 5% drop from <\/span>2015 amount aimed<\/a> for in the action plan.<\/p>\n

The good news for lungs in Shanghai is that PM2.5 has already achieved the goal 42 micrograms (\u00b5g\/m3<\/sup>). The bad news is that Shanghai\u2019s PM2.5 still averages more than 3 times the WHO annual limit. Long-term exposure to PM2.5 above 10\u00b5g\/m3<\/sup> has been shown to increase cardiopulmonary and lung cancer mortality with more than 95% confidence, according to WHO\u2019s Air Quality Guidelines<\/a>.<\/p>\n
