Could paper towel be an effective material for making homemade masks in times of crisis and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/02\/28\/810268983\/after-coronavirus-outbreak-protective-masks-are-in-short-supply\">shortages<\/a>? On average,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/coronavirus-pollution-masks-n95-surgical-mask\/\">coronavirus particles measure approximately 0.1 microns<\/a> in diameter, so 3 times smaller than measured in our test. Don&#8217;t believe us; believe <a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/can-hepa-filters-capture-nanoparticles\/\">the data<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/blog\/what-is-pm0-3-why-important\/\">Here&#8217;s the science behind it \u00bb<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Paper Towel Particle Capture<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The results weren&#8217;t great. A single layer of kitchen paper captured just 23% particles. Not surprisingly, masks that fit better will let fewer particles in. However,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19193267\">some scientists hypothesize<\/a> that masks help, in part, because they prevent us from touching our face.
