He bought a HEPA filter, strapped it to a fan, and&nbsp;ran some tests using a&nbsp;particle counter&nbsp;he bought. He published the results on his blog&nbsp;<a href=\"\/en\/clean-air-blog\/\">Particle Counting<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I saw a problem that needed to be fixed.<\/p><cite>\u2013 <em>Thomas Talhelm, Founder<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/diy\u65e0logo\u6807\u5fd7.png\" alt=\"First DIY air purifier\" class=\"wp-image-8365\" width=\"452\" height=\"339\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/china\/archive\/2013\/08\/one-low-cost-safeguard-while-living-in-toxic-china\/278352\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">few<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/112173\/a-grad-students-diy-30-air-filter-could-help-chinese-city-dwellers-breathe-easier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">magazines<\/a> wrote about Thomas&#8217; &#8220;re\u00addiscovery,&#8221; and then the <a href=\"http:\/\/beijingenergynetwork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beijing Energy Network<\/a> suggested he lead DIY workshops to help concerned Beijingers build their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When people said they had trouble finding the right type of fan and a trustworthy HEPA, Thomas and his friends launched&nbsp;Smart Air&nbsp;as a social enterprise to ship fans and filters at an affordable price, to people all over the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since starting in 2013, Smart Air has been shipping simple, no-nonsense air purifiers and providing free education and knowledge on air pollution using our unique social enterprise model.
