The main reason is likely to be a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/07\/30\/727688757\/mongolias-capital-banned-coal-to-fix-its-pollution-problem-will-it-work\">initiative<\/a> introduced by the Government of Mongolia in May 2019 to from coal-fired stoves. \u00a0Despite the improvement, the average concentration of small PM2.5 particles was still solidly in the \u201cunhealthy\u201drange and often spiked into the \u201cvery unhealthy\u201d and \u201chazardous\u201d ranges. Pollution levels during winter 2019 were still 10 times higher than the WHO recommended limit of 10\u00b5g\/m3.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/112345t-300x214.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"287\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/112345t-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/112345t-768x547.png 768w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/112345t-600x428.png 600w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/112345t.png 818w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Comparing data from the past five years, the 2019 winter pollution levels were the lowest, 9% lower than the previous best of 109\u00b5m\/m3 seen during winter 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Analyzing data on a month by month basis, we found that PM2.5 levels decreased in all months from winter 2018 season.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/2345678-300x185.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"439\" height=\"271\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/2345678-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/2345678-768x473.png 768w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/2345678-600x369.png 600w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/2345678.png 941w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why was Ulaanbaatar\u2019s air cleaner this year?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccacoalition.org\/en\/news\/mongolia-increases-climate-change-ambition-actions-improve-air-quality-and-human-health\"><\/a>Government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/bulletin\/volumes\/97\/2\/19-020219\/en\/\">ban<\/a> on the transport and combustion of raw coal within Ulaanbaatar city limits. In its mandated city-wide switch to improved fuels, the Government produced and distributed over 600,000 tons of improved fuel briquettes. The improved fuel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/07\/30\/727688757\/mongolias-capital-banned-coal-to-fix-its-pollution-problem-will-it-work\"><\/a> than the raw coal typically used by Ulaanbaatar\u2019s ger neighborhood residents during Mongolia\u2019s frigid winters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/345678-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"389\" height=\"292\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/345678-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/345678-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/345678-600x450.png 600w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/345678.png 775w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bags of improved fuel briquettes in Ulaanbaatar city (<a href=\"https:\/\/ikon.mn\/opinion\/1ssn\">source<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>However, \u00a0PM2.5 reductions were notably higher in October to December when compared to other months \u2013 36% for these months, as opposed to only a 23% reduction for January and February. Why? <a href=\"http:\/\/gogo.mn\/r\/2e7n9\">Evidence<\/a> suggests that <a href=\"http:\/\/erennews.mn\/article\/28698\">shortages<\/a> of the improved fuel briquettes toward the end of the winter led some Ulaanbaatar residents <a href=\"https:\/\/ikon.mn\/opinion\/1ssn\"><\/a>. In other words, the improved fuel effort lost momentum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Air Still Unsafe in Ulaanbaatar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite progress, Ulaanbaatar\u2019s 2019 winter average PM2.5 level remained 10 times higher than the World Health Organization\u2019s annual exposure guideline of 10 micrograms per cubic meter. On a daily and hourly basis, PM2.5 levels often spiked into the \u201cvery unhealthy\u201d and \u201chazardous\u201d ranges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A 20% reduction of PM2.5 is an impressive feat. It appears that the use of improved fuel briquettes is actually paying off. But there\u2019s still a long way to go. Studies have found that <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2020-01-07\/air-pollution-silent-killer-even-when-it-meets-epa-standards\">even low levels<\/a><\/span> of air pollution are harmful to health.
