Lung problems don\u2019t even count for half.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span>How exactly do people die from air pollution?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span>This graph shows the three major categories of deaths from air pollution. What would you think goes into those boxes?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-Air-Pollution-Death-Causes-EN1-1024x766.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"393\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5602 lazy-loaded\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>My first thought would be lung cancer. Survey says?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/3-Air-Pollution-Death-Causes-EN2-1024x771.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"506\" height=\"381\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5604 lazy-loaded\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>Just 14%! Not nearly as large as I imagined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>Well, OK, lung cancer is just one type of lung problem. How about emphysema, bronchitis, and other lung diseases?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/4-Air-Pollution-Death-Causes-EN3-1024x793.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"514\" height=\"398\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5606 lazy-loaded\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>Hmm, we\u2019re still only at 28% of deaths due to air pollution. So what\u2019s hiding in that big blue piece of the pie?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/5-Air-Pollution-Death-Causes-EN4-1024x780.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"519\" height=\"396\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5608 lazy-loaded\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>Heart attacks, strokes, and other diseases in our blood vessels. Really?\u00a0<\/span><span>It makes so much sense to look at our lungs because that\u2019s where the air goes. But it turns out that we\u2019re looking in the wrong direction. We should\u2019ve been looking here:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6-Human-Circulatory-System.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"371\" height=\"536\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5609 lazy-loaded\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>Does air pollution really affect our heart and blood vessels? Here are three points of evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span><strong>1. More people have heart attacks on days with bad air pollution<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4372644\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>A study in Boston<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span>found that on days with higher particulate air pollution (blue line), more people had heart attacks (red line).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/7-Heart-Attacks-and-PM2.5-Boston-EN-1024x746.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"494\" height=\"360\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5610 lazy-loaded\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>Now, we\u2019re not talking about a wild epidemic of heart attacks. The base odds of heart attacks on any given day are low, probably one in millions. So a 50% increase is important, but it moves the odds from 1 in a million to 1.5 in a million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span><strong>2. Wearing a mask in polluted Beijing reduces blood pressure<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>But hey, heart attacks are for unhealthy old people, right? I\u2019m just 32 years old.\u00a0Well,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/Is-there-a-medically-proven-advantage-to-wearing-a-pollution-mask-when-cycling\/answer\/Thomas-Talhelm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two studies<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>randomly assigned healthy adults in Beijing to wear a mask outside or not. No one had a heart attack, of course, but people without a mask had higher blood pressure and lower heart ratevariability.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/8-Masks-Lower-Blood-Pressure-EN-1024x662.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"331\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5613 lazy-loaded\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span>3. Breathing purified air improves blood inflammation and constriction of veins<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span>OK, OK. But maybe you\u2019re a healthy young person, just 20 years old. Maybe your lungs are even \u201cused to\u201d the pollution. My friends in China joke that Chinese people have the strongest lungs in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/Do-air-purifiers-depend-on-the-placebo-effect-or-do-they-actually-work\/answer\/Thomas-Talhelm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Researchers in Shanghai randomly assigned<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0healthy college students\u00a0to use a real purifier or a fake purifier for 48 hours in their dorm rooms. Here\u2019s what the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/What-is-the-difference-between-PM2-5-and-PM10-with-respect-to-the-atmospheric-pollutants\/answer\/Thomas-Talhelm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>PM2.5<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0levels were like in their dorm with a fake purifier (blue) and a real purifier (yellow).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/9-Placebo-Test-2-EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"544\" height=\"282\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5615 lazy-loaded\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>They tracked all sorts of effects on biomarkers. When they looked at effects on blood inflammation, the effects were pretty big!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/10-Blood-Inflammation-Effect-EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"559\" height=\"408\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5617 lazy-loaded\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>Same for blood coagulation:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/12-Coagulation-Effect-EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"376\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5621 lazy-loaded\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>And constriction of veins:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/11-Blood-Constriction-Effect-EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"414\" height=\"397\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5619 lazy-loaded\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>But when they looked at effects on lung function, the effects were tiny and not statistically significant:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/12-EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"397\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5622 size-full lazy-loaded\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>That blew my mind. All this time we were looking in the wrong place!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>If someone in Beijing or Delhi fell over and died of a heart attack, would most people think, \u201cAh, air pollution\u2026\u201d?
