Auto-mode is a feature designed to automatically adjust the purifier speed based on the detected air quality. While this is an attractive selling point, you should know that \u2018good\u2019 air quality is not good by UK standards<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why does this matter? Clinell states that auto-mode is only a concern at 50 \u00b5g\/m3 yet the World Health Organisation guideline for the annual average PM2. 5 is just 5 \u00b5g\/m3, which is ten times lower.\u00a0This means that auto-mode reduces the filtration levels when the particle count is still dangerously high!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ionisers add ozone<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
Ionisers can add ozone to the air, which is a lung irritant. The NHS guidelines on HEPA filters<\/a><\/span> states: Devices which incorporate ionisation, photocatalytic oxidation, electrostatic precipitation or other similar technologies alongside filters are not currently recommended for healthcare use unless there is clear evidence for both effectiveness and safety. These devices can sometimes introduce, or create through secondary reactions, chemical by-products into a room which may themselves have an adverse health effect. Across the pond, the EPA provides a similar caution against ionisers in air cleaners<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On page 17 of the Clinell user manual<\/a><\/span>, it lists 'ionisation function' in the technical specs. We are unsure why this is needed, most manufacturers choose ionisers when using a lower-grade filter<\/a><\/span> to bump up the filter efficiency. With 2 x H14 filters, it's a strange choice to add ionisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How to choose an air purifier wisely <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
To avoid falling for marketing gimmicks, we recommend the following when choosing for an air purifier:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Look for reviews from credible sources that conduct unbiased testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- If the CADR and noise levels (including what distance this is measured at) are not listed on all speeds, ask the supplier for this information - they have it even if they choose not to publicise it<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Assess whether the additional features justify the higher price<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Check which air purifier is the best for you based on your room size and check if the room coverage is area of volume (m2 vs m3)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Our final thoughts<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
When shopping for air purifiers, look beyond the flashy marketing and look for reviews from credible sources.\u00a0Choose an air purifier based on your research rather than because you have seen it somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Institutions such as schools and the NHS need their budgets to stretch as far as possible - more clean air reduces the infection load so choose based on high performance, low noise and value for money. Always check the filter replacement costs prior to purchase. For example, the Clinell is \u00a3180, the Blast Mini is \u00a390.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our view on the Clinell air purifier is that it delivers a high amount of clean air on medium speed, but:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Bear in mind that this could still be too noisy for continuous running as the decibel levels are tested at a distance of 3m. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Switch off the auto-mode otherwise it will largely default to operating at the lowest speed (200m3\/hr) as indoor PM2.5 levels are not typically this high in the UK.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Contact the manufacturer to find out if the ioniser can be switched off.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\nBottom Line<\/div>Bottom Line: Don't base your purchase decision on whether you've seen an air purifier in a hospital<\/div><\/p>\n
Selecting from the NHS supply chain makes purchasing faster and less bureaucratic, it doesn't mean you are purchasing the best air cleaner in terms of value, noise levels, clean air efficiency or energy efficiency<\/div>
