The Smart Air lab put real-world carbon filters to the test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Who Needs Carbon Filters Anyway?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/filter-types\/\">I wrote early on<\/a> that my number one concern in China is particulate pollution. It&#8217;s on so many people&#8217;s minds that nowadays even the guy I buy&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chuan_(food)\">kebabs<\/a>&nbsp;from knows the word &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/pm10-pm2-5-difference-particle-air-pollution\/\">PM2.5<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"1002\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/China-kebab-chuanr.jpeg\" alt=\"China kebab chuanr\" class=\"wp-image-10609\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/China-kebab-chuanr.jpeg 668w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/China-kebab-chuanr-400x600.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/China-kebab-chuanr-200x300.jpeg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>HEPAs do an amazing job at removing particulates, but&nbsp;particulates aren&#8217;t everything. Gases like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/indoor-air-quality-iaq\">volatile organic compounds<\/a>&nbsp;(VOCs) are so small that they slip through HEPAs. &#8220;VOC&#8221; is a big category, including things like benzene and formaldehyde.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/indoor-air-quality-iaq\">VOCs can cause cancer<\/a>, throat irritation, dizziness, and other not-fun side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2598\" height=\"1227\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/VOCs-Common-Sources-EN.png\" alt=\"VOCs Common Sources\" class=\"wp-image-7841\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/VOCs-Common-Sources-EN.png 2598w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/VOCs-Common-Sources-EN-300x142.png 300w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/VOCs-Common-Sources-EN-768x363.png 768w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/VOCs-Common-Sources-EN-1024x484.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2598px) 100vw, 2598px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"media-holder media-holder-draggable media-holder-img\">\n<div class=\"media-button icon_close media-killer\">And for homes that have VOCs problems, we&#8217;re supposed to use activated carbon filters. But do they actually work?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When I published&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/china-english-how-to-make-a-diy-air-purifier\/\">the instructions for how to build your own purifier<\/a>, I wasn&#8217;t comfortable recommending activated carbon because I hadn&#8217;t tested it, and I didn&#8217;t want to just trust what the big filter companies say. So this year, I set out on a journey to test whether carbon actually works.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"365\" height=\"318\" src=\"\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/carbon.png\" alt=\"Activated carbon granules\" class=\"wp-image-10608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/carbon.png 365w, https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/carbon-300x261.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Put to The Test: Does Carbon Really Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I soon learned that gas testing is not easy. First off, &#8220;harmful gases&#8221; is not a natural category. You can buy a particle counter that will detect all particles of a certain size, but there is no detector that will detect all gases. Instead, you need one for each type of gas, and that is not cheap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, my scientific curiosity cost me $3,542 for this&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indsci.com\/products\/multi-gas-detectors\/mx6\/\">Industrial Scientific Ibrid MX6<\/a>. It detects VOCs, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and nitrogen dioxide. It uses a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Photoionization_detector\">photo-ionization detector<\/a>&nbsp;to measure VOCs from 0-2,000 parts per million with a resolution of .1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"media-holder media-holder-draggable media-holder-img\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/66.media.tumblr.com\/104b82bd2c888dc7de690eecb274e9e3\/tumblr_inline_ngg3njKnyS1s4lgm1.png\" alt=\"Testing Activated Carbon MX6 Ibrid\" width=\"256\" height=\"359\"><\/figure><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"media-button icon_close media-killer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, I needed a source of gas pollution. Interestingly enough, my apartment didn&#8217;t have enough VOCs to register on the MX6&#8211;nor did 8 other Beijing apartments I tested. (That speaks to whether purifier companies should scare people into thinking that everyone needs carbon.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because I didn&#8217;t have detectable VOCs in my home, I had to go out and find VOCs to pump into my room. I chose cigarettes because they are&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18351112\">known to emit VOCs like benzene<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancerresearchuk.org\/about-cancer\/causes-of-cancer\/smoking-and-cancer\/how-smoking-causes-cancer\">formaldehyde<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In each test, I burned 3 Marlboro cigarettes in an enclosed 3.78 m2 porch. At the same time, I ran&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/cannon\/\">the Cannon<\/a>&nbsp;on high for five tests with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/product-category\/carbon-filters\/\">composite carbon filter<\/a>&nbsp;on the front:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"media-holder media-holder-draggable media-holder-img\">\n<figure><a href=\"http:\/\/item.taobao.com\/item.htm?spm=a1z10.1.w4004-7528923369.1.o1kYOk&amp;id=42959087014\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/66.media.tumblr.com\/874721704258973b7c34d4f5166c9ed2\/tumblr_inline_ngg4q3a9Gq1s4lgm1.png\" alt=\"image\"><\/a><\/figure><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"media-button icon_close media-killer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I ran four control tests with a fan but no filter. That way the room still has air flow, but no carbon.&nbsp;The cigarettes burned out after about 15 minutes, and I left the fans on for another 30 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Results: Does Carbon Really Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at the Cannon + carbon alone after the cigarette extinguished, the VOCs dropped. From there, we can zoom out to include the time the cigarette was burning and the test where we had just a fan (no filter). From there, it becomes clearer that the carbon was removing VOCs above and beyond just having a fan on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Averaging across all of the tests, the VOCs reached a maximum of about 1 ppm while the carbon was on. Without carbon, the air still had VOCs after 30 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Averaging over all of the tests, the carbon removed 38% of VOCs by the time the cigarettes burned out compared to the fan-only condition. Yes. But does everyone need carbon? Purifier companies have a financial incentive to convince people to buy carbon filters. They make more money if they can scare people into buying carbon. But does everyone need carbon?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t want to scare people into buying carbon.&nbsp;Why? In most homes, my MX6 detected zero VOCs. I only found VOCs in homes that had an obvious source of pollution such as remodeling or smoke. And in all of the places where the MX6 detected VOCs, I was able to notice a chemical smell. That makes sense, since lots of VOCs have noticeable smells, like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benzene\">benzene<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toluene\">toluene<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Formaldehyde\">formaldehyde<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, I don&#8217;t want to say that VOCs are never a problem. Photo ionization detectors like the MX6 are not the most sensitive test type out there. I bet I\u2019d pick up small amounts of VOCs if I sent air samples to a laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, scientists have used fancier methods and found similar results. For example, scientists in Hong Kong tested homes and found that&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1352231001004356\">most non-smoking homes did not have un-safe levels of VOCs<\/a>. We need more tests like this to be sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, I will not be using carbon in my home, but I think it is right for people whose homes have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Recent remodeling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Recent painting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Smoking<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Odors<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Nearby sources of gas pollutants (such as living near a factory)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6.&nbsp;Symptoms such as inflammation and asthma<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Do I Still Need The HEPA?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. Carbon <a href=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/%E5%B8%B8%E8%A7%81%E7%9A%84%E5%87%80%E5%8C%96%E5%99%A8%E6%9C%89%E5%87%A0%E7%A7%8D%EF%BC%9F\/\">captures gas pollutants<\/a>, not particulate pollution. I wouldn&#8217;t have even tested this, but <a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/about\/our-team\/\">Anna<\/a>&nbsp;accidentally forgot to attach the HEPA and unknowingly ran&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/%E6%96%B0%E7%9A%84%E6%B5%8B%E8%AF%95%EF%BC%81450%E5%85%83diy%E5%A4%A7%E7%82%AE%E5%92%8C8%E5%8D%83%E5%85%83iq-air%E7%9B%B4%E6%8E%A5%E5%AF%B9%E6%AF%94\/\">a regular particulate room test<\/a>&nbsp;with carbon only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"media-holder media-holder-draggable media-holder-img\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/66.media.tumblr.com\/7c5b378896b31881e19070a1b7653899\/tumblr_inline_ngyae2vqqm1s4lgm1.png\" alt=\"Activated Carbon Filter Versus Particulate Test\" width=\"420\" height=\"427\"><\/figure><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"media-button icon_close media-killer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The results weren&#8217;t pretty&#8211;far below the 95% reduction with the added HEPA. Thus, I do not recommend using carbon only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, I&#8217;m posting the raw data and more details on the methods for fellow nerds below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"media-holder media-holder-draggable media-holder-hr\"><hr class=\"tmblr-truncated\">\n<div class=\"media-button icon_close media-killer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does Carbon Really Work: Open Methods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the gas test, all of the doors and windows were closed. Because the test took place in an enclosed porch, there were several windows, which means the room was less well sealed than an interior room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the test, I burned three Marlboro cigarettes pointing straight up in an ash tray on the floor. The gas detector was on a small ledge at just above waist height, only a few feet laterally away from the cigarettes. The purifier was placed a couple feet from the cigarettes in the center of the porch with the air stream pointing upward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Limitations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Burning three cigarettes in a small room is extreme. With the exception of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_P1aSfh7IEUE\/TMhDAY9CtEI\/AAAAAAAABGk\/k3deB3juuO4\/s1600\/airport%2Bsmoking%2Barea.jpg\">airport smoking lounges<\/a>, few places will have this much smoke in one place. However, the test does demonstrate that carbon reduces VOCs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people have asked me how long carbon filters last. Unfortunately I don&#8217;t have a good answer to that.&nbsp;The carbon filter I used was still effective after several of these powerful smoke tests, which should be far more VOCs than a normal person would face, but I cannot say more than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VOC Info:&nbsp;The PID lamp has an&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tsi.com\/uploadedFiles\/_Site_Root\/Products\/Literature\/Application_Notes\/TSI-147_Photo_Ionization_Detection_Technology.pdf\">eV rating<\/a>&nbsp;of 10.6. eV ratings determine what types of VOCs PID machines can detect. With a rating 10.6 eV, this machine was probably reliably detecting&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/docs\/81-123\/pdfs\/0049.pdf\">benzene, which has an ionization potential of 9.25<\/a>&nbsp;and perhaps&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indsci.com\/docs\/manuals\/VX500_IP.pdf\">toluene, which is at 8.82<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This PID lamp is not designed to detect&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/docs\/81-123\/pdfs\/0293.pdf\">formaldehyde, which has an ionization potential of 10.88<\/a>. However, I later conducted tests with formaldehyde samples and found that the MX6 could detect it, and an engineer at Industrial Scientific told me he thought it was plausible that the machine would pick up on formaldehyde, although not 100% reliably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Detector Info<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The MX6 came with a pump to draw in air (as opposed to versions that passively sample air). During the test, the MX6 had a filter on designed to prevent particles from entering the machine. I zeroed the machine if necessary before the test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Early Tests<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As I started doing the tests, I was still figuring out how to do the tests&#8211;it seems simple when you look at the results, but tests like this are not easy! For the first three control tests, I had not yet decided to let the MX6 run for 30 minutes after the cigarettes burned out, so data is limited for those three occasions. However, the conclusions are similar with those three tests excluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Control Condition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the control condition, I used&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Honeywell-HT-900-TurboForce-Fan\/dp\/B001R1RXUG\">a Honeywell fan<\/a> on the low setting to approximate the air flow of a Cannon on high with a filter on it. The point is that filters lower the air flow, so the Honeywell may be a better approximation of the amount of air flow during the experimental condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, I ran tests with an IQ Air Health Pro Plus (1) with the filters removed and (2) with the pre-filter only as additional control tests. The results were similar to the Honeywell fan-only tests. I&#8217;ll use the IQ Air tests as the control condition in tests of the IQ Air&#8217;s ability to remove VOCs in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gas Test Data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The table below summarizes the gas tests. More tests would give a more reliable estimate of the effectiveness of using carbon only, but because carbon isn&#8217;t designed to get particulates in general, I&#8217;m hesitant to subject anyone to that much dirty air.
