I’ve purchased used Sharp air purifiers for $20-$30 USD on Kijiji and such. Some with unused HEPA’s and some with the nastiest darkest tobacco smelling HEPA filter I will ever see. The whole unit was caked with dust even on the inside from the imperfect seal.
Needless to say, those units were disassembled down to each screw and everything washed and cleaned, and added in my own DIY filters from MERV13 furnace filters and a bunch of other electrostatic, carbon and pre-filters all cut to fit.
