Analysis: Most Polluted Cities in Malaysia
The PM2.5 levels in this list range from 12.8 µg/m³ (Kluang) to 21.2 µg/m³ (Shah Alam). Most cities cluster between 15–20 µg/m³, indicating relatively moderate and consistent air quality among urban areas. While these figures are lower than heavily polluted regional hotspots in Southeast Asia, they still exceed the WHO annual guideline of 5 µg/m³, meaning that even Malaysia’s cleaner cities are above optimal health standards.
Urban and industrial hubs such as Shah Alam, Kuala Lumpur, and Klang appear toward the higher end of this “lowest” list, likely reflecting traffic density, industrial activity, and urban development. Meanwhile, smaller or less industrialized cities such as Kluang, Alor Setar, and Malacca show comparatively lower PM2.5 levels.
