HEPA filters (or High efficiency particulate air) are filters that capture the really tiny air pollution particles that penetrate into our lungs and blood. The Smart Air filters capture 99.5% of even the tiniest particles, cleaning out smog, soot, PM2.5, pollen and mould.
How often should I change the HEPA filter?
We ran tests in our lab in Beijing, showing the filter should be replaced 140 days of use at 8 hours a day. That’s maximum 1000 hours in total. For the Philippines, we recommend between 140-160 days based on where you live. Living next to the dirty EDSA that’s polluting Manila? You may even need to replace it sooner.
Here’s one filter a Smart Air user from Manila in the Philippines showed us, which they’d used after just 11 weeks. Why so black? That’s because this user was living next to Manila’s busy roads, where PM2.5 levels are at their worst.
Where did the ‘140 days’ come from? Smart Air co-founder Gus tested a single HEPA on his Original DIY for 200 days to see how long it would last in real Beijing air. After 100 days of use at 8 hours a day, effectiveness dropped 4%. After 200 days of testing, Gus’s dirty filter was only removing half the particles in the room.
We know that buying new HEPA filters is a significant recurring cost, so we do our best to keep prices low.
Buy an Reliable HEPA For the Right Price
We wanted to know if HEPA filters could be made even cheaper. We tested a filter we bought from China for 220 pesos and compared it to our own filters. The cheap HEPA filter performed much worse. We recommend avoiding unknown HEPA filters, with no performance or effectiveness tests to back them up.

Can I wash my HEPA filter?
We tested this in our labs, we tried washing, vacuuming and scrubbing a HEPA filter to find out if there was a cheaper way of making your filter last longer. Turns out none of these methods were effective in increasing the lifespan of a HEPA filter, so we still recommend replacing them when their time is up.
