Q&A: Does the DIY Consume Less Electricity Than Other Purifiers?

laundrylist 提问: What is the energy usage associated with running a cheap box fan for eight hours at night versus the two expensive models that you compared your cheaper model to?

Excellent question! I’ve wondered about that myself. The fan is 50 Watts, compared to 27-215 for an IQ Air (depending on fan speed). So they are comparable, although the IQ Air is using less energy on the lowest setting.

I may have seen reference to 4″ thick (10cm) HEPA filters offering expansive air filtration [and possibly an improvement in the volume of air processed?] My Ikea $AUD10 HEPA H12 (99.5%) filter is 25cm wide, 39cm high, very well sealed, BUT only 2cm… Read more »

In Australia, with mains around 246V, my inexpensive Ikea DC air purifier, with just the large ($AUD10, ~$USD7) HEPA filter installed, has a specified CADR of 140m3/h from 14W – although requiring more like 17.2W from the grid (0.070A for a Power Factor ~0.8). On a medium setting this air purifier is even more efficient with a specified CADR of 90 from just 5.6W – although a poorer PF ~0.6 (0.039A) requires around 9.6W from the grid. Of interest, even though the circular slots for fan intake are relatively small, with the well sealed rectangular filter extensive use resulted in… Read more »
