Description

Sqair HEPA E12 filter

Clean air in your bedroom

The Sqair HEPA E12 filter protects you from air pollution

Air pollution is a serious environmental and health issue. Tiny microscopic particles can slip past our body's defences and penetrate deep within our lungs and heart. Air quality in our homes is all the more important during the COVID pandemic.

The Sqair's HEPA filter effectively traps particles like PM2.5, dust, pet fur, viruses and mould, giving you cleaner air in your bedroom. Sleep more easily without worrying about allergies or asthma.

All Smart Air filters are certified to GB13554-2008 (now updated to GB13554-2020) & GBT6165-2008 standards. This is the Chinese equivalent of EN1822 / ISO29463 and is independently tested.

Huge surface area captures 99.5% of pollutants

HEPA filters are simple – larger filters can clean more air. The Sqair HEPA filter has an expanded area of 1.55m², equivalent to 22 sheets of A4 paper.

Effectively traps particles as small as 0.005 μm

The Sqair’s H11 HEPA filter can clean 99.5% of above and below 0.3 microns, PM10 and even 0.005 micron particles.

Why H11? We actually found the H11 filter to be more effective than a H12 filter for the Sqair.

Can HEPA filters capture the coronavirus?

A common concern is whether HEPA filters can filter viruses like the COVID-19 coronavirus. HEPA filters removes particles greater than or equal to 0.3 microns, but virus particles are smaller. The coronavirus measures 0.06 to 0.14 microns in diameter. Are air purifiers then powerless against viruses?

Actually, HEPA filters actually work great at capturing viruses. This is because a HEPA filter works not like a net, but through a process called diffusion. Learn more about how this works here.

How long can I use the Sqair HEPA filter?

HEPA lifespans are tricky. Purifier companies like to give lifespan numbers without proper reasoning. Clearly, the HEPA filter will not last as long in UK air as compared to Swiss air.

We estimated the lifespan of the Sqair’s HEPA filter using two methods. Based on Beijing data, we recommend up to 1500* hours of use. This is roughly equal to 6 months if you use the purifier 8 hours a day.

* The filter lifespan will vary according to the pollution levels in your location. Using air quality data from the W.H.O., we can estimate that the HEPA lifespan for the UK will be 2300 hours or 9 months. Please use this figure as a guideline only as this is the average across the whole of the UK and London will be more polluted than the Scottish Highlands.

Can I wash a dirty HEPA filter?

Unfortunately not. We ran experiments to test this and found that washing HEPA filters does not prolong their lifespan. In fact, washing HEPA filters with water actually decreases performance. That’s why we recommend you replace your Sqair HEPA filter after the maximum hours of use.

At £26 for a replacement, the Sqair HEPA filter offers the best prices for clean air.

HEPA Filter - FAQs

When should I replace the HEPA filters in my Smart Air Purifier?

The HEPA filter lifespan varies for each purifier. You can find the recommended filter replacement time in each of our air purifier manuals. However, lifespan also varies depending on where you use your purifier, how dirty the air is, and how often you turn it on every day. That’s why we make sure to run real-world tests on all our purifiers, and provide a HEPA filter lifespan calculator to help you calculate how often you need to change your HEPA filter for your exact situation.

How is the new HEPA E12 filter able to achieve the same CADR as the original HEPA E11 filter?

After much hard work by our factory and R&D team, we're happy to announce that we've been able to switch from a HEPA E11 in the Sqair to HEPA E12 filter without any change in CADR! Usually increasing the HEPA grade will lower the CADR but we revisited the materials with the factory and found an E12 material with slightly lower air resistance. After working on 10+ prototypes and tweaking the number of folds to the filter, we were able to provide a higher-grade filter with the same CADR.

What’s the difference between the E11, E12 and H13 filters?

Filters are graded on their ability to trap particle PM0.3 as this is the smallest particle size that travels in a straight line, not the smallest size that can be trapped. In fact, smaller particles travel in a zig zag way (called the Brownian motion) making it next to impossible to pass through the HEPA fibres. This means that most filters will trap virtually 100% of smaller / nano-particles (including the virus). If a company is saying their purifiers can trap particles smaller than PM0.3 they either haven’t done their research or, worse still, they are using this as marketing tactics to push sales.

In terms of the different options for the Sqair, the different grades will capture the following percentages of PM0.3:

HEPA E11 – 95%

HEPA E12 – 99.5%

HEPA H13 – 99.97%

Why do my HEPA filters smell?

The HEPA filter is made of non-toxic PP/PET material. A new filter may have a faint scent from the glue which is also non-toxic. After being used in the purifier for 2-3 days, this scent will fade away.

If the filter is left unused for a period of time with no wind passes through, the excessive moisture in the air will aggravate the breeding of bacteria, which produces acidic smell when turning on the model again.

In this case, you can turn on the machine and let the wind blow through several times, or put the filter under the sun for a few days. If all the above does not work, it is recommended to replace the filter.

Why not use a higher grade HEPA filter?

Smart Air’s current HEPA filter is selected from more than 20 different pricings and different purification efficiencies after many experiments and comparisons. A higher grade filter with a higher purification efficiency also means lower airflow. Thus, we combined the fan power and effectiveness to select the current filter. See here for more details: https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/weaker-filter-stronger-purifier/

Does HEPA filter efficiency decrease over time and with age?

This question is answered in two ways:

  1. Over time, HEPA filters actually get more effective at capturing tiny particles. As a HEPA filter gets used, it gets filled up with dirt and particles. This improves the HEPA filter’s ability to filter out the air.
  2. As a HEPA filter gets more and more clogged up with particles, the resistance to air passing through the filter also increases. This means that although the filter is better at capturing particles, it’s more difficult for air to pass through it.

Overall, these two factors mean that a HEPA filter’s overall ability to clean a room (or the air purifier’s airflow and CADR) does decrease over time and with use.

Does Smart Air recycle filters?

For now, we don’t provide recycling service, because there is no proper way to do so. We tried to make the filters as environmentally friendly as possible. For example, we replaced metal frames with biodegradable cardboard. We also make sure to only use certified environmentally friendly glue in our filters, and to reduce the amount of glue without compromising on cleaning efficiency. E.g. for the Blast and Blast Mini filters, when we switched from metal to cardboard frames, we also reduced the total glue used, being even more environmentally friendly!
