Blast HEPA’s massive area captures 99.97% of pollutants
The Blast HEPA filter is huge — 20 times the size of our Original DIY HEPAs.
We tested over 10 different HEPA materials before deciding on using an H13, 99.97% grade HEPA filter. That means it can capture 99.97% of those particles above (and below) 0.3 microns! The Blast HEPA’s efficiency means it’s suitable for health facilities like hospitals.
All Smart Air filters are certified to GB13554-2020 & GBT6165-2021 standards. This is the Chinese equivalent of EN1822 / ISO29463 and is independently tested.

Are HEPA filters effective against COVID?
A common concern is whether HEPA filters can filter viruses like the COVID-19 coronavirus. HEPA filters removes particles greater than or equal to 0.3 microns, but virus particles are smaller. The coronavirus measures 0.06 to 0.14 microns in diameter. Are air purifiers then powerless against viruses?
Actually, HEPA filters actually work great at capturing viruses. This is because a HEPA filter works not like a net, but through a process called diffusion. Learn more about how this works here.
How often should I change the HEPA?
We tested a HEPA for 200 days to get a sense of how long HEPAs last in real Beijing air.
Based on that data, Paddy estimated a HEPA lifespan of 5280 hours* for the Blast. This is roughly equal to 22 months* at 8 hours of use every day.
* The filter lifespan will vary according to the pollution levels in your location. Using air quality data from the W.H.O., we can estimate that the HEPA lifespan for the UK will be 10300 hours or 42 months. Please use this figure as a rough guideline only as this is the average across the whole of the UK and London will be more polluted than the Scottish Highlands.

Can I wash a dirty HEPA filter?
Unfortunately not. We ran experiments to test this and found that washing HEPA filters does not prolong their lifespan. In fact, washing HEPA filters with water actually decreases performance. That’s why we recommend you replace your Blast HEPA filter after the maximum hours of use.
