* The SA600 is sold with both HEPA & Carbon filters but you can run the purifier with just the HEPA filters only

** The GBT 18801 standard recommends replacing HEPA filters after effectiveness drops to 50% of its initial value. Our lifespan tests were conducted in Beijing but the UK average lifespan is based W.H.O. air quality data. Our filter calculator gives you a rough guideline of lifespan based on how many hours a day you run your air purifier but note, the lifespan will vary depending on the pollution levels in your city and is based on running at top speed (it will last longer on lower speeds).

SA600 - FAQs

Why are there different lifespans listed for filters?

The lifespan of a filter is based on the pollution levels. Filter replacement lights are usually based on polluted countries like China but the air in the UK is vastly different. This is exactly we are not a fan of filter lights, they are great in polluted countries but in the UK, it can result in you changing the filter much earlier than necessary. We have created a filter replacement calculator to give you a rough idea of when you need to change your filter but it has caveats: It is based on running the purifier at top speed only (good news is that the filter can last even longer on slower speeds) and is based on countrywide averages. As the air in London is very different to the air in the Scottish Highlands, this calculator should be used as a guideline only. https://smartairfilters.com/en/when-change-hepa-filter/

Why does the filter replacement light go off early?

This light is a ‘filter check’ light rather than a filter replacement light and is designed to go off after 1,045 hours. In some countries (such as India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, etc.) where the pollution tends to be quite high, 1,045 hours will be enough to replace the filters. In the UK, it is 4,800 hours – more than 4 times longer. If you choose to use the filter replacement light, you might want to put a sticker on the filter with the numbers 1-4. Each time the filter light goes off, you can check off one of the numbers so by the time it goes off after the 5th time, you should change the filter. Alternatively, you can set up an email reminder: https://smartairfilters.com/en/when-change-hepa-filter/

Why are there two separate HEPA filters/ dual outlets for the SA600 rather than 1 thicker filter/ outlet (like the Blast)?

The advantage of double-sided air intake is that the air intake volume is larger, so the motor has low speed and low noise but sufficient air volume. This way, it saves energy and power.

Can you wash the SA600 pre-filter?

Yes, the pre-filters are designed to be washed when clogged, just remember to dry it fully before putting it back. Some people vacuum instead but please be sure to use a sealed, bagged, HEPA vacuum otherwise you will just be blowing the caught particles back into the air again. The pre-filter collects larger particles and increases the lifespan of the HEPA (which can’t be washed/vacuumed). The frequency necessary for washing the pre-filter will depend on your situation. With pets or in a dusty environment, you may need to do this monthly.

How is the power of the SA600 so low on medium (9W) and low (3W), compared to high (60W)?

The SA600 uses much less power than other purifiers for the same CADR - even on high. The low power is achieved by the double inlet design of the purifier. For lower CADR values (low, mid speeds) this gives an incredibly low power usage. Comparatively, this makes the purifier power usage on high appear much higher. However, the cubic relationship of fan airflow and power means this is expected, and all purifiers follow the same trend.

Can I run this as a HEPA only unit?

Yes, some countries prefer this as a HEPA only unit. In the UK, we sell this with HEPA and Carbon but you can choose to remove the carbon filter or just not replace it.

Why is your CADR listed as 500m3/hr when this is for HEPA only?

Customers can choose to remove the carbon filter if they have no need for it, this will increase the CADR from 470m3/hr to 500m3/hr.

Will CADR increase if we remove the pre-filter from the SA600?

Only slightly. Centrifugal fans give you a certain airflow, so the CADR might increase just slightly (approximately 1%) but remember that the pre-filter is there to protect the HEPA.

Why doesn’t the SA600 have a built-in air quality monitor?

Just like all our purifiers, we’ve taken the conscious decision not to put an air quality monitor in the SA600. The reasons for this are described in this article. We still recommend a standalone air quality monitor that can be moved around independently of the air purifier.

Does the SA600 have I/O and level memory?

Yes. If the power is switched off, the SA600 will automatically turn on and run at the same level once the power supply resumes.

How do the buttons for visually impaired people work on the SA600? Is it Braille?

It’s not Braille. We are considering including a card brochure in future batches that has two or three lines of braille telling people to listen to the instruction manual online. However, the two raised sections on the air purifier control board work like the raised sections on the J and F keys on your keyboard (check out your laptop keyboard now!). These help those who are hard of sight identify certain buttons, and feel their way around.

Can this be wall-mounted?

The SA600 can be wall mounted vertically or horizontally by fixing the smallest side of the purifier (depth) to the wall leaving the dual outlets clear. There are no fixing brackets included but if you look under the handles on either side, there are two screw holes on the upper surface. There are also two holes on the base of the purifier. Fixing horizontally may make it easier to operate the buttons.

Why do I need to push the button twice to change the speed or switch the purifier off?

The SA600 has an auto-dimming feature which switches on after a few minutes. The first time you push the button, you light up the panel, then you can make changes to the speed. The auto-dimming feature helps preserve electricity and is also useful at night if you use the SA600 in your bedroom.

We recently ordered the SA600, a QT3 and an air monitor and are extremely pleased with them. We found ordering easy and hassle free, the items arrived quickly and on time with no problems and the instructions for set up are easy to understand. I was very pleased with the quality of the products, they are well built and I think good value for money. Brilliant company and I wouldn’t hesitate to order from Smart Air again.

I only received my SA600 two days ago. Setting 1 is so quite that you can't hear anything. I wish setting 1 would be more powerful. Setting 1 doesn't need to be sooooo quite not even for the night. If you have a big bedroom setting 1 won't be strong enough. Setting 2 is louder than setting 1 is on the Blueair 221 which is far too loud for sleeping. I find setting 2 too loud for using it in the living room. However, my living room is big and if setting 1 would have a slightly faster fan it would be enough to use the air purifier on setting 1. I have a PM2.5 of 4 in the living room on setting 1 while the Blueair 221 kept my PM2.5 as low as 1. The air purifier isn't exactly pretty as the Blueair Pure air purifiers are but it's not that ugly. The front design is very nice but the sides are not and since it has to be placed sideways I am looking at the not so pretty sides a lot. The air purifier needs a lot of space or needs to be placed sideways because it has filters on both sides. You can't place it near a wall. It has to be 30cm away from the wall. I own the Blueair 221, two 411 and one of the Blueair in the size of the 411 but with a useless sensor which doesn't react to any amount of dust. I had asthma and wanted to stop using the Blueair because of the build in ionisers. I own a uHoo air monitor which measures ozone and my ozone readings were not low. I don't know if ozone outside was so high or if it was caused by the Blueair. If you have a large living room or large bedroom and you don't want to hear anything I'd recommend to get two SA600. It's amazing how quite setting 1 is. Perfect for my tiny bedroom because the SA600 is not strong enough on setting 1 to clean a big bedroom but then, there is no space in a small bedroom for such a large air purifier. I wish the company would have made setting 1 just a tiny bit louder and stronger. I love the low electricity consumption and that the carbon and HEPA filters are not combined. It's very good that the carbon filters have activated carbon pellets and not that useless carbon sponge. They will absorb VOCs etc. and when they are full they will release what they have absorbed back into the air. I am now trying to squeeze this air purifier into my bedroom. I wish the company could make me the SA600 with slightly stronger setting 1. Customer service is excellent. All my questions were answered. The knowledge base on this website is awesome and I usually do a lot of research online. Delivery was fast. I ordered their Qingping air monitor as well so that I have one air monitor in the bedroom and one in the living room. The price for the Blueair 221 had increased by £29 and is in my opinion a total rip-off especially since the filter is a combination filter with a cheap lousy charcoal sponge. I am very, very relieved that the SA600 doesn't have the fabric outside around the air purifier. It might look nice but it's a mess and you will get all the dust into your lungs when you remove the fabric. Yuck. Vacuum cleaning also doesn't help much. I love it that I can just pull out the pre-filter of the SA600 and wash it. I wish they would sell replacement pre-filters because the filters need to dry before you can use them again. I usually have my air purifier running 24 hours. I have done a lot of research and I am glad that I found Smart Air.
