Smart Air

Regarding the orange, the limonene in it reacts with the ozone in the air and makes formaldehyde, so it would be expected to register wouldn’t it ..tho not at a dangerous level I suppose. Interesting idea to use your nose, I like it! The only thing is we become immune to smells and only really notice changes, so you’d need to leave your room/house for a while and return. Not really a problem tho
Thanks for the info, I’m trying to find a good formaldehyde sensor / detector, and am buying a few to test, much like you did I guess.
Check the latter part of my response to Emma. I think it’s the best way to check if a device is accurate. Better yet, if you can afford it, just buy the pro machines. Good thing about that is that you can lend to your friends and even provide services to others in the neighborhood using those!
How about those chemical test kit for formaldehyde? Are they accurate?
The self-test boxes are good for comparisons of formaldehyde levels between rooms and apartments, not so good for accuracy. The one I use is BCoole which you can get on Taobao. I would recommend, for example, doing one control test using one of the box tests in an apartment where the air quality is good (aka: you can breathe and stay days in without feeling unwell, say, in a friend’s house), and then doing a few more in the spaces of the apartment or unit in question (the problematic one). You can then compare the resulting colors in each with the other, as well as to the color key for level comparisons. So if say, you get a 0.03 for the control space (the friend’s place) and a 0.06 in the new place, you know there is double the FMD in the latter. The numbers may not be all that accurate, but the comparison is useful. Better yet, have two control tests before testing the place in question, one of the friend’s place and one of a place you KNOW is high in formaldehyde or that makes you sick. This way you can gauge the results better. That is what I do with the box tests. Otherwise, hire a CMA certified air quality testing authority in the city you live and they can give you a much more accurate test, but you have to pay quite a bit – I believe the pricing in my city in 2022 is around RMB 1000 for one apartment (3 testing spots). Those are definitely accurate. If you have bought a handheld device, you could always check the results against the CMA test to check if your handheld device really works. I heard very few works in the market except for a Japanese one that costs a lot (I believe more than RMB 15,000? Otherwise, I also sometimes think maybe there is a way to get a hold of a professional device (the ones on tripods – the kind the testing companies use). They work just like the self test box in that chemicals are used but rather than you eyeballing the colors, they have a reader to read the test result. Everything is more accurate.
