What’s Inside a Blast

Purifier companies can make obscene profits when most people don’t understand how purifiers work. Here’s the honest truth: a purifier is a fan + a filter. In this case, that fan and filter are just really big.

Which Purifier Should I Buy?

Choosing the right air purifier can be difficult for first-time buyers. Here are some important things to consider:

1. Know Your Purpose

Do you have any particular needs? HEPAs are enough for allergies and asthma, but recent renovation may require a carbon filter.

2. Know Your Size

The Sqair purifier is ideal for bedrooms, but larger spaces like offices or hospitals may require the more powerful Blasts.

3. Know the Costs

The main cost of air purifiers is filter replacements. Different purifiers have different HEPA lifespans and costs.

The Blast Mk II FAQs

How to know when it is time to replace the Blast’s HEPA filter?

We recommend replacing the Blast Mk II filter every 12 months. But the truth is the exact time depends on many factors such as the number of hours used and local pollution levels. The most accurate way to determine when to replace a HEPA filter is to use an air quality monitor. Learn More: How to use an air quality monitor to test a HEPA filter

Are Smart Air purifiers better than other air purifiers?

Smart Air purifiers use the same cleaning principle as most other air purifiers. The technology behind air purifiers is not complex, and readily available.

However, Smart Air is the only air purifier company committed to transparent communication through open data. We avoid overcomplicating our air purifiers with high markups and marketing gimmicks. Smart Air purifiers are honest, data-backed, and streamlined to do one thing: clean air. And because we don’t overcomplicate things, our purifiers are some of the quietest and most energy-efficient on the market.

Can Smart Air’s purifiers filter COVID-19?

HEPA filter air purifiers like Smart Air’s have been shown to filter out COVID-19 viruses, and lower transmission. View the CDC data on how HEPAs reduce COVID-19 transmission here.

What pollutants does the Blast Mk II filter?

Smart Air purifier’s HEPA filters capture many types of particulate air pollution, including nanoparticles as small as 5 nanometers (1/10th the size of COVID-19) to 30 μm (the size of pollen). The whole range includes viruses, bacteria, PM2.5, PM10, pet allergens, dust, and mold. An additional activated carbon filter can be added on top of the HEPA filter in all of Smart Air’s products. The carbon filters can absorb VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) such as formaldehyde, paint thinners, petroleum fuels, or dry cleaning agents. Carbon filters also remove odors. Where should I position my Blast Mk II air purifier?

Our tests show the position of an air purifier in a room does not matter, as long as 1) The air purifier is at least 6 inches (15 mm) away from the wall. 2) The air purifier is strong enough for the room it is in.

    Pros:

    1. Large air cleaning capacity.
    2. Works almost silently even at highest fan speed. Sometimes I have to put my hand 2-3 inches away from it to see if it works.
    3. Expensive but costs less than other large air purifiers with same cleaning capacity.
    4. Prefilter is thicker than what comes in Philips and traps a lot of dust. The HEPA and carbon filters were relatively clean when I changed them.

    Cons:
    1. Sometimes the power cord behind it gets loose and it turns off until pushed back in. Since it’s mostly silently, hard to know when that happens.
    2. There should be a better design than opening 3 screws to take out the pre filter. I have swapped the side holding metal strips with the top and bottom ones. It’s not a good fit but this way I have to only open the top screw to get the pre filter out.
    3. Filters are heavy. It’s hard for a single person to change them, try to get 2 persons to change it. Once I was changing it on my own. The loose power cord behind, unknown to me fell on the bottom frame. The filters with the front frame wouldn’t fit, since there was a power cord blocking the frame at the back. After some time the front metal frame with carbon filter and HEPA filter fell on my toe, which caused a subungual hematoma.

I have had this device for more than a week now. We had recently renovated our home (around 1000-1100 square feet in area) and so decided to go with the optional carbon filter along with the HEPA filter. I have been using the device at its max setting and with the carbon filter. During the week, outside AQI was around 70 (measured with my laser egg) and this device was able to reduce it to about 5-8 in my living room (where the device was kept) and adjacent bedroom, and around 10-15 in the part of my home farthest from the purifier. There are times when I have seen the AQI drop to 1, which means that the meter is not able to detect any pollution at all. Today, however, it was Dusshera and the AQI went up to about 210 outside my home and was 150 inside my home. Seeing that it was a good chance to test out the purifier, I turned it on, and within 30 minutes the pollution was down to 80. After an hour, it was at 20, and in 2 hours it was at the 5-8 level in the living room, and 12-15 in the area farthest from the purifier. I have found that keeping a balcony open takes the levels to around 20-30. Running the kitchen exhaust and chimney also has some impact.

As far as the carbon filter goes, the filter definitely works but do not expect it to remove the odour of freshly polished/treated items immediately. There were some freshly polished items in my home, and although it did not remove the odour immediately, and I had to use other means along with the purifier for that, but it did help a lot. There was a gas leakage in my home, and it positively reduced the smell of the leakage (mercaptan) by a bit. Every time I would turn it on the smell would be restricted near the gas meter whereas other times it would be flooded throughout my kitchen. Although you don’t want a gas leak to stop smelling, it does show that the purifier is working. My home is near a drain, and opening the balcony in the morning after the purifier has run throughout the night brings in a faint smell of sewage in the home (typical of drains), which means that the purifier is perhaps working on the gases being emitted by the drain, though slowly.

The device has a very neutral and more of an industrial design. It is not very good looking – does not look like a flashy gadget but also does not look very out of place – it easily blends in. It is larger than it may seem to be in the photos – around the size of a single door fridge, so one would preferably need to allocate space for it before buying it. It does not need a power socket however, and works on a normal one. It is also metallic and therefore very heavy, though the wheels on the purifier are really useful. Once assembled, it is super easy to move between rooms, etc. – I would even say much more easier than my MI air purifier which is probably 5 times lighter than this. This small feature increases the usability by a lot. The device’s plug has some information mentioned in Chinese, and it seems to me like an ELCB plug with a rating of 10mA which is pretty good. This means that the plug will trip in case an earth leakage of 10mA is detected. This makes it safe as far as getting a shock from the metal body of the purifier is concerned. They do give a universal adapter from GM along with the plug to make it fit in Indian sockets.

The device makes surprisingly low noise. It makes you wonder if it is working at all. At full speed with the two filters on the noise level is much lower than that of my Honeywell or MI room air purifiers running at full. It is less than the noise made by my ceiling fans. It is because of the large size and the large filters, and also because much of the noise comes from the back which gets absorbed by the walls as it bounces back.

There are some negatives – the carbon filter needs to be installed inside the HEPA filter housing, and I found that to be very difficult. The manual also does not specify any instructions on applying the carbon filter. Because of the size and weight of these filters and how much of a tight fit it is, the process can get tough. If you are going for a carbon filter I would suggest requesting them to send it to you pre-assembled with the HEPA so you don’t have to do it yourself.

The pre filter I was told needs to be washed around every week. But you need to unscrew the pre-filter to take it out and screw it back on. It seems to be pretty easy using a regular screwdriver, but for example if I’m not at home, my mom won’t be able to do it herself. There can probably be a better implementation for a device meant for personal use.

Another con is that this is a whole house device, but particularly in summers you might want to close your bedrooms and turn on the AC. It still works, but less effectively for closed rooms. For instance, I have kept my bedroom closed since the past 3 hours with the purifier running in the living room. My room’s AQI has increased in this time from 5 to 30, whereas the living room is showing an AQI of 2 right now. For reference, the outside AQI is 200. I guess you might use it as a whole home purifier in the day, and a room purifier in the night. That seems easy to pull off because of the wheels. Also, you need to close all your doors and windows for this to work properly, although increased carbon dioxide levels are also not good so you should open them periodically or keep a small area open for ventilation.

Despite the areas for improvement, the device has been performing very well for me so far, and I have been very satisfied with the customer support. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a home or office air purifier. I think it should also find a place in restaurants, gyms, etc. I’ve seen many restaurants with a tiny room purifier kept in a corner running at the auto setting. I doubt that achieves anything at all as far as the air quality is concerned. They could benefit from this purifier.

I am totally in love with my Ladakh Air Purifier. I don’t think a day has gone by since January 2019 when I bought that it hasn’t been used. It runs nearly 24/7. It is quiet, elegant and place for your magnets or art! Most importantly it is effective. It has replaced the one, two or maybe even three room air filters I had around the house. Every time I measure the AQI inside my house (using the Laser Egg) with the Ladakh Air Purifier running, it is always in single digits anywhere in the house (area < 1400 sq feet). I am so relieved to have this. I breathe easier.

I recommend you get the carbon filter too. You would notice the difference.
