  • “Currently, the devices being used in the school are quiet enough that teaching is generally not disrupted, even at high speed. This helps us improve air quality in a way that doesn’t impact learning. The devices themselves are incredibly easy to install and use, featuring a very simple speed-setting switch on the rear of each unit. Smart Air blasts offers relatively low running costs, which are essential in the current educational climate of shrinking budgets.........“

What's inside a Blast

Purifier companies can make obscene profits when most people don't understand how purifiers work. Here's the honest truth: a purifier is a fan and a filter. In this case, that fan and filter are just really big.

* Tests on the highest setting show that adding a carbon filter reduces airflow by 11%. This means that this purifier with both HEPA and Carbon filters will have an the airflow of 1780m³/h and a CADR to 846m³/h

*What is CADR and how is it different from an air purifier airflow? Learn more here »

Which purifier should I buy?

Choosing the right air purifier can be difficult for first-time buyers. Here are some important things to consider:

1. Know your purpose

Do you have any particular needs? HEPAs are enough for allergies and asthma, but recent renovation may require a carbon filter.

2. Know your size

The Sqair purifier is ideal for bedrooms, but larger spaces like offices or hospitals may require the more powerful Blasts.

3. Know the costs

The main costs of air purifiers are filter replacements. Different purifiers have different HEPA lifespans and costs.

One of the best investments I’ve made in a product. The AQI inside my house is between 5 and 10 on average when the AQI outside in Noida is ~ 350+.

I love it. It is keeping our main floor air quality where it needs to be for our health. It's a bit bigger than I expected. Sadly, it arrived with a few transport dents. But, it works out of the box.

In my opinion, this is the best air purifier on the Indonesian market (besides BlueAir). The fan noise is very small, the replacement filter price is also affordable and the filter can last more than 12 months (if the air purifier is used 24 hours). It's just a matter of improving the marketing so that it can be more widely known in the Indonesian market. Good job Smart Air!

Shipping was quick to my office in Xi’an. Arrived sooner than promised.

I am very impressed with the construction — sheet steel is thick, finish is uniform, 3-speed fan is quiet — quiet enough for an office setting even at the highest fan speed.

The Blast is so simple that it hardly needs any instructions. I had it unpacked and running in less time than it took me to configure the AirVisual Pro Air Pollution Monitor. I also got the monitor in order to know how bad things were in the office. When I unpacked the monitor, the air quality in my office was exactly the outdoor reading. What I like about the monitor is that it exports data, so I could see how the Blast was doing. It cleared the PM2.5 matter from a 3.5mx6mx2.8m office in less about an hour. I plotted readings. (yes, I am a data geek)

We couldn’t be happier with our Blast. I work in a large apartment that has been converted into an office. Some of my co-workers have small purifiers in their closed offices, but my desk is in the 70m2 open-plan living room and the front door is often cracked open to run cables back and forth so I knew we needed a powerful unit. The Blast arrived just in time for the recent Beijing sandstorm (2000+ AQI outside) and it was down to 30 AQI within half an hour. I couldn’t believe it, nor how quiet the machine is. It’s almost silent, even on the highest setting. We’re in love!

I have had this device for more than a week now. We had recently renovated our home (around 1000-1100 square feet in area) and so decided to go with the optional carbon filter along with the HEPA filter. I have been using the device at its max setting and with the carbon filter. During the week, outside AQI was around 70 (measured with my laser egg) and this device was able to reduce it to about 5-8 in my living room (where the device was kept) and adjacent bedroom, and around 10-15 in the part of my home farthest from the purifier. There are times when I have seen the AQI drop to 1, which means that the meter is not able to detect any pollution at all. Today, however, it was Dusshera and the AQI went up to about 210 outside my home and was 150 inside my home. Seeing that it was a good chance to test out the purifier, I turned it on, and within 30 minutes the pollution was down to 80. After an hour, it was at 20, and in 2 hours it was at the 5-8 level in the living room, and 12-15 in the area farthest from the purifier. I have found that keeping a balcony open takes the levels to around 20-30. Running the kitchen exhaust and chimney also has some impact.

As far as the carbon filter goes, the filter definitely works but do not expect it to remove the odour of freshly polished/treated items immediately. There were some freshly polished items in my home, and although it did not remove the odour immediately, and I had to use other means along with the purifier for that, but it did help a lot. There was a gas leakage in my home, and it positively reduced the smell of the leakage (mercaptan) by a bit. Every time I would turn it on the smell would be restricted near the gas meter whereas other times it would be flooded throughout my kitchen. Although you don’t want a gas leak to stop smelling, it does show that the purifier is working. My home is near a drain, and opening the balcony in the morning after the purifier has run throughout the night brings in a faint smell of sewage in the home (typical of drains), which means that the purifier is perhaps working on the gases being emitted by the drain, though slowly.

The device has a very neutral and more of an industrial design. It is not very good looking – does not look like a flashy gadget but also does not look very out of place – it easily blends in. It is larger than it may seem to be in the photos – around the size of a single door fridge, so one would preferably need to allocate space for it before buying it. It does not need a power socket however, and works on a normal one. It is also metallic and therefore very heavy, though the wheels on the purifier are really useful. Once assembled, it is super easy to move between rooms, etc. – I would even say much more easier than my MI air purifier which is probably 5 times lighter than this. This small feature increases the usability by a lot. The device’s plug has some information mentioned in Chinese, and it seems to me like an ELCB plug with a rating of 10mA which is pretty good. This means that the plug will trip in case an earth leakage of 10mA is detected. This makes it safe as far as getting a shock from the metal body of the purifier is concerned. They do give a universal adapter from GM along with the plug to make it fit in Indian sockets.

The device makes surprisingly low noise. It makes you wonder if it is working at all. At full speed with the two filters on the noise level is much lower than that of my Honeywell or MI room air purifiers running at full. It is less than the noise made by my ceiling fans. It is because of the large size and the large filters, and also because much of the noise comes from the back which gets absorbed by the walls as it bounces back.

There are some negatives – the carbon filter needs to be installed inside the HEPA filter housing, and I found that to be very difficult. The manual also does not specify any instructions on applying the carbon filter. Because of the size and weight of these filters and how much of a tight fit it is, the process can get tough. If you are going for a carbon filter I would suggest requesting them to send it to you pre-assembled with the HEPA so you don’t have to do it yourself.

The pre filter I was told needs to be washed around every week. But you need to unscrew the pre-filter to take it out and screw it back on. It seems to be pretty easy using a regular screwdriver, but for example if I’m not at home, my mom won’t be able to do it herself. There can probably be a better implementation for a device meant for personal use.

Another con is that this is a whole house device, but particularly in summers you might want to close your bedrooms and turn on the AC. It still works, but less effectively for closed rooms. For instance, I have kept my bedroom closed since the past 3 hours with the purifier running in the living room. My room’s AQI has increased in this time from 5 to 30, whereas the living room is showing an AQI of 2 right now. For reference, the outside AQI is 200. I guess you might use it as a whole home purifier in the day, and a room purifier in the night. That seems easy to pull off because of the wheels. Also, you need to close all your doors and windows for this to work properly, although increased carbon dioxide levels are also not good so you should open them periodically or keep a small area open for ventilation.

Despite the areas for improvement, the device has been performing very well for me so far, and I have been very satisfied with the customer support. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a home or office air purifier. I think it should also find a place in restaurants, gyms, etc. I’ve seen many restaurants with a tiny room purifier kept in a corner running at the auto setting. I doubt that achieves anything at all as far as the air quality is concerned. They could benefit from this purifier.

Great service, delivered promptly before expected. Seriously notice the difference when I plugged it in and it is only summer.
I’m not sure what everyone is talking about, referring to noise etc. the unit is pretty damn quiet…
thanks team, I will recommend your product to other ex-pats like myself. Cheers ?

We love the Blast. Our particle counter reading is now 0 or 4! A wonderful peace of mind to finally have clean air in our home in China. It is indeed a big unit so finding the space was a little tricky and the fan blows a lot of cool air so we need to turn it around when sitting near it. Will be welcomed in summer! We are not bothered by the noise definitely quieter than Xiaomi and the Smart Air Cannon.

These are awesome. We have one in our bedroom at full blast constantly and have never considered it loud at all. We watch films fine and don’t even notice it. And we sleep in perfectly clean air… seems like a pretty good deal to me! Thanks guys!

    Love it!
To say the least. As a new ex pat in China, buying an air purifier could have been a real headache, but Smart Air helped immensely. I did my research and it made sense to choose SmartAir. It arrived quickly as it had to be shipped. A couple of days after using it a friend with an egg that reads air quality stopped by and honestly, I was concerned. Even told my wife perhaps we are better off not knowing because if we don’t like the results, what could we do?
That wasn’t a worry because the results were better than expected. Phew.
I know quite a few people who have bough purifiers since they moved here and I am 100% confident I made the best decision to purchase from Smartair. Some who already bough a purifier are considering buying a SmartAir because their more expensive machines are not cleaning their air nearly as well.
