Who We Are
Our journey began in 2019 with a shared frustration when our founders, Aysha and Boudewijn, experienced Dhaka’s severe air pollution firsthand. Faced with Aysha’s asthma and the reality of Bangladesh’s worsening air pollution, Boudewijn searched for air purifiers that were both affordable and effective. What he found instead was a market crowded with overpriced, unreliable models. This inspired them to start Smart Air Bangladesh, aiming to help people breathe better by providing access to reliable and affordable clean air solutions.
Now, we are a trusted name in providing reliable, affordable solutions and information to combat air pollution in Bangladesh.

The Smart Air Story
In January 2013, PhD student Thomas Talhelm was shocked by how much air purifiers cost.
He bought a HEPA filter, strapped it to a fan, and ran some tests using a particle counter he bought.
He published the results on his blog Particle Counting.
The First DIY Air Purifier
A few magazines wrote about Thomas’ “rediscovery,” and then the Beijing Energy Network suggested he lead DIY workshops to help concerned Beijingers build their own.
In August 2013, Thomas and a few friends held their first DIY workshop in Beijing sharing this “rediscovery” with the world.
Launching Smart Air
When people struggled to find the right type of fan and a trustworthy HEPA filter, Thomas and his friends launched Smart Air to provide affordable fans and filters to people worldwide.
Since starting in 2013, Smart Air has been shipping simple,
no-nonsense air purifiers and providing free education on air pollution using an unique social enterprise model.
The work we do and the profits we make don’t go into some rich investor’s pockets, but help more people across the world breathe clean air.
