In the pursuit of fitness, many gym-goers prioritise exercise equipments, nutrition plans, and training routines while leaving out one crucial aspect.
The quality of the air you breathe during workouts
There’s a simple solution to this – installing air purifiers to your gym environment can make an impactful difference, not only in terms of comfort but also in the overall health and performance of your gym members.

Promotes respiratory health
Sweaty workouts in enclosed spaces can lead to a build-up of airborne pollutants like dust, allergens, and even mould spores. These particles can heighten respiratory issues and allergies, making it harder for gym members to breathe comfortably during their workouts.
Installing an air purifier equipped with HEPA and carbon filters will create a cleaner and healthier environment for both staff and patrons.
Promotes better performance levels
Poor air quality can lead to fatigue and a decrease in oxygen intake, which impacts endurance and stamina during workouts. Filtration will remove pollutants from the air allowing gym members to experience improved breathing efficiency and better oxygen flow to their muscles. With cleaner air, gym members can achieve better results in their fitness goals.
Minimises odours and stale air
Gyms are notorious for accumulating unpleasant odours from sweat, body oils, and even bacteria lingering in the air. Not only does this create an unpleasant environment, it can also put off potential members from returning. Choosing an air purifier equipped with a carbon filter can effectively neutralise these odours, leaving the air fresh and revitalised.
Supports overall wellness
Beyond the physical benefits, clean air can boost your mood, reduce stress, and enhance mental focus during workouts. By prioritising the air quality in your gym, you are not only investing in the health of your customers but also creating a more enjoyable and motivating environment for them to pursue their fitness goals.
Workouts since the pandemic
A recent poll conducted on social media by Smart Air UK revealed intriguing insights into the workout scene since Covid-19 began.
- 51.7% of participants prefer working out at home
- 33.3% expressed a desire to return to the gym
Nearly all participants expressed their concerns about air quality in gyms
- 59.1% of participants stated that the presence of air purifiers and monitors in gyms would somewhat influence their decision to return to gyms
- 36.4% believed it would strongly impact their decision
The unanimous sentiment among respondents was the importance of gyms prioritising clean air and fostering a healthy workout environment, drawing attention to the growing awareness of clean air in gyms.
Do you know the air quality in your gym?
Don't assume that an air conditioning / HVAC system is providing you with adequate ventilation or even filtration. Most are designed around thermal comfort in gyms that are usually low ceiling and high occupancy levels. Using an air quality monitor helps you understand exactly what you are breathing in and remember that during a workout, your increased respiratory rates lead to a much larger number of inhaled pollutants. Don't just monitor CO2 levels, gyms also have a high concentration of particles and chemicals in the air.
We did some tests in Beijing’s gyms in 2018 (https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/gym-beijing-safest-air/). On average, PM2.5 levels in the gyms were only 55% of outdoor air. Although gyms have lower PM2.5 than outdoor air, gym air is often still far over the safe limit. It is good to have a particle counter to test out the gym air on a polluted day before deciding which gym is safe to go to.
Make sure your lungs get a workout at the same time by breathing in cleaner, filtered air!
