The HEPA filter can be used on the DIY alone (without a pre-filter), to filter small pollutant particles in the air. The carbon filter can also be used alone on the DIY, to remove harmful formaldehyde in the air. The DIY cannot support 2 filters because the airflow will not be strong enough to filter the air pollution effectively.
