How Can I Tell If My Home or Office Has Good Ventilation?

CO2 levels are a good proxy for how well a home or office is ventilated. An area with poor ventilation that is filled with lots of people will likely have much higher CO2 levels than a space with better ventilation.

In other words, places with high CO2 levels will likely have poor ventilation. Places with lower CO2 levels typically indicate better ventilation.

Measuring CO2 is affordable and easy, reliable CO2 monitors can cost less than US$100, and are portable to allow for testing in multiple rooms. CO2 levels that indicate ‘good’ ventilation would be any number below 800ppm. If after testing with a CO2 monitor, your indoor CO2 levels are above 800ppm, then you may wish to consider installing filtration systems (such as air purifiers) or improving your ventilation.

Data shows that homes and offices with good ventilation have reduced virus transmission. CO2 can be a useful measurement in detecting this, and reducing the risk of virus transmission.
