Can I DIY an Air Purifier Using a Round Standing Fan? Should I Be Concerned About a Square Filter on a Round Fan?

It’s certainly possible to DIY an air purifier out of free-standing fans. We’ve seen several instances of Smart Air users making DIY air purifiers using them.

Some tips on what to watch out for:

1. Our data shows that having a filter that is able to cover the entire surface of the fan gives the best cleaning efficiency. As such, we recommend you find a HEPA filter big enough for the fan.

2. Free-standing fans typically have an all-metal wire (or plastic) frame, that goes round the entire fan. In this case, it’s very easy for air to pass around the HEPA, instead of going through it. We recommend using tape or cardboard to create a ‘funnel’ around the fan, so as to push air through the HEPA filter.
