Can I Install HEPA Filters onto my Centralized HVAC Air System?

It may seem like a smart solution to install HEPA filters into the centralized HVAC air system your space. However, HEPA filters have a high resistance and therefore require a strong fan to blow air through them. Installing HEPA filters onto your air handler is likely to put additional strain on your air handler’s motor, which may damage it.

If you don’t want to purchase air purifiers or don’t have the ability to install air purifiers in your space, then you could try installing MERV filters onto your air handler. MERV filters have a lower air resistance than HEPA filters, so will not put as much strain on the motor. However, prolonged use with MERV filters may still damage your air handling unit.
